2020 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Leading Actor
February 5th, 2020
Our annual Oscar Prediction contest is underway so now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. We are continuing our shortened schedule with Best Lead Actor. We have a definite favorite this year, but I’m really hoping for an upset.

2020 Awards Season: Oscar Nominations
January 13th, 2020
The Oscar nominations were announced on Monday, and the results were... well, there were some puzzling results. Joker led the way with eleven nominations. ... A film with 69% positive reviews earned the most nominations. It’s not the worst-reviewed movie to earn a Best Picture Nomination—after all, Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated just last year. However, this film is arguably the worst-reviewed movie to ever earn the most nominations in a single year.

2020 Awards Season: Golden Globes Nominations
December 11th, 2019
The Golden Globes nominations are the second major Awards Season set to come out. It is still very early in the year and the predictive value of the Golden Globes is a little suspect, but there are still some things to learn here. (This is especially true on the TV end, as there’s talk about how strange the nominations are this year.) Marriage Story led the way with six nominations, just ahead of The Irishman and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, both of which picked up five nods.

Limited and VOD Releases: These Limited Releases will Never Surrender
November 29th, 2019
Thanksgiving is one of the biggest weekends for wide releases, but it is a terrible week for limited releases. If I kept my usual rule about minimum number of reviews to be on this list, then there would be just a handful of films to talk about. Fortunately, all of them are worth checking out. The Two Popes is the biggest in terms of buzz, but its limited theatrical release window will keep it from doing particularly well in theaters. I’m most interested in Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary, but I hope The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open does very well.

Limited and VOD Releases: Dark Days for Limited Releases
August 17th, 2018
It’s a short week for limited releases, as it is an awkward time of year to release a film. It’s too late to take advantage of the summer holidays, while it is far too soon for Awards Season buzz. That doesn’t mean there are no films earning amazing reviews. In fact, there are several: Blaze, Minding the Gap, We The Animals, The Wife, and The Wild Boys. Hopefully at least one of them will find an audience in theaters.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Game of Thrones: Season Six
November 13th, 2016
Long time fans of Game of Thrones have just one question on their minds... Why is Season Six coming out this week and not in spring just before Season Seven comes out, like they’ve done every year before. Well, I have some bad news for you. Season Seven isn’t coming out in the spring. It’s coming out in the Summer. So will this Blu-ray holdover fans until the next season comes out?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Game of Thrones: Season 5
March 13th, 2016
Season Six of Game of Thrones starts on the 24th of April. Still a full month away. On the other hand, Season Five comes out this week and to celebrate we have a Contest and a review. How was Season Five compared to the previous seasons? Is it still engaging? Or now that the show is running out of source material to pull from, is it starting to show cracks?

2012 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part IV
December 19th, 2012
There are only a few days left till Christmas and we are officially in the panic zone for gift shopping. This week we have our final installment of our annual Holiday Gift Guide. Part I dealt with first run releases, Part II dealt with TV on DVD releases, Part III dealt with limited releases, foreign titles, and classics. This week, we deal with some music, books, games, as well as releases from the first three parts that I forgot the first time around. As always, there are quite a few in that last category. (I also use this time to burn off some releases that arrived late. This way I can get through all of the late reviews quicker than normal and actually have enough time to celebrate Christmas.)
