Theater counts: Civil War looks to unseat Godzilla x Kong
April 11th, 2024
For the past two weeks Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has enjoyed a prime seat atop the box office charts, racking up $140 million from North American ticket sales in its first 13-days. This week, however, will present the biggest test to date for the iconic movie monsters as dystopian action-thriller Civil War arrives in cinemas.

Limited and VOD Releases: Battle of the Early Award Season Contenders
September 22nd, 2017
There are a trio of films on this week’s list that are Awards Season adjacent: Battle of the Sexes, Stronger, and Victoria and Abdul. All three earned some pre-release Awards Season buzz, but I’m not sure any of them will be serious contenders. Hopefully at least one of them will be a box office success.

Featured VOD Review: Hidden Figures
April 10th, 2017
Hidden Figures is an Oscar-bait movie, there’s no getting around that. It is an inspirational movie based on real life events that opened in limited release in December. Clearly they were going for Awards Season glory. It did earn a number of nominations, but was only able to pick up one award. On the other hand, the film earned nearly $170 million and is the biggest limited release hit of 2016. Is the film just a little too mainstream for Awards Season success? Did it deserve better on Oscar-night?

2016 Preview: March
March 1st, 2016
It's March 1st, which is not only the beginning of the month, but also Super Tuesday. If you are not American and don't pay attention to American politics, Super Tuesday is sort of like the Oscar night of the primary season. I was going to write about my predictions, but it looks like the race is about to be over. On the Republicans side, if Trump gets more than 50% of the delegates, then he has won. It will be too late to stop him. If he gets less than 40%, then it becomes a real race again. If the polling is correct, then he will get closer to 50% than 40%. On the Democratic side, Sanders needs at least 45% of the delegates, or it is over for him. Anything less than that and Hillary Clinton will have too big a lead to overcome. If the South Carolina result is an indicator, Hillary Clinton could get two-thirds of the delegates awarded tonight.
As for the box office, February was amazing, thanks to Deadpool's record-breaking opening and better than expected legs. The month ended with 2016 being nearly 4% higher than 2015's pace. Additionally, there are some big releases coming out this month with both Zootopia and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice looking to get more than $200 million, while Allegiant should hit $100 million. Last March, there were also three films that earned more than $100 million, but only one $200 million hit, Cinderella. It should be a really close race between 2016 and 2015.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Seven
December 26th, 2014
Star Trek: The Next Generation's Blu-ray run ended this month. I already mentioned the Blu-ray as a possible holiday gift, but since I've reviewed every other season of this series, I thought it would be strange not to do a full featured review as well. Season seven is widely regarded as the worst season since season two, but it is as bad as that? Or are there still enough solid episodes that fans will want to complete their collection?

Featured Blu-ray Review: Hayao Miyazak Blu-ray Double-Shot: Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke
November 18th, 2014
To coincide with the home market release of The Wind Rises, two other Hayao Miyazak films are making their debut on Blu-ray this week. I've combined these reviews into one, partially because I've already reviewed one of the movies. Are they worth picking up? Are they worth the double-dip?

Limited Releases You Can Take Pride In
September 26th, 2014
The list of new releases is a little calmer this week than it was last week. There are still a few movies that could do well. The Two Faces of January has some of the best reviews and has an impressive cast, but it is also playing on Video on Demand, so its box office numbers might not shine. On the other hand, I think Pride will turn its excellent reviews into a long run on limited release. It might even find a significant measure of mainstream success.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Bachelorette
March 17th, 2013
Before Bachelorette opened in theaters, there were some reports it was going to open wide. In the end, it opened in only a few dozen theaters and struggled to find an audience in limited release. Granted, given its genre, it was always going to struggle in limited release, but is the film worth checking out on the home market? Or is it a misfire that was dumped to limited release, because the studio knew it was a flop?
