April 28th, 2024
Challengers will power to victory at the box office this weekend, with Amazon MGM Studios projecting a $15-million opening weekend for the sports drama. That’s comfortably ahead of our Friday-morning prediction. Unsung Hero is also beating our Friday forecast, with an expected $7.75-million debut for Lionsgate.

Weekend predictions: Challengers looks like the film to beat

Theater counts: Challengers seeks to oust Civil War as widest release
April 25th, 2024
After two weeks of topping the domestic box office charts, Civil War’s reign will likely be over this weekend as a trio of newcomers make their way into North American theaters. The dystopian action-thriller has taken in just over $48 million in its first 13 days, and should equal its $50 million budget by the end of the weekend. This week sees the release of Zendaya’s Challengers, which looks to have the best shot of becoming the latest box office champ. We once again don’t have an official count for Civil War but we expect it to be a tight race for the widest release this week.

Theater counts: Black Panther remains easily the widest release heading into the Thanksgiving Holiday
November 17th, 2022
After amassing a colossal $181 million in its domestic opening weekend, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever holds steady going into its second weekend, keeping its 4,396 locations from week one. The sequel surpassed $400 million globally on Wednesday, with $213 million coming from North American viewings, while $187 million arrived from overseas markets. Wakanda Forever won’t be challenged this week at the box office, but two new wide releases make their arrival to cinemas, and She Said, and The Menu, should provide options for nearly every taste.

2018 Preview: November
November 1st, 2018
October continued 2018’s phenomenal box office run, for the most part. There were a couple of films that missed expectations by $10 million or more, but on the other hand, Vemon and Halloween were smash hits and are now the first and second biggest October debuts of all time. Furthermore, 2018’s lead over 2017 is, as I’m writing this, just shy of $1 billion and if 2018 can maintain this lead, it will be one of the biggest year-over-year increases of all time. It won’t. The fun times end now. Why is that? Last November was amazing. There were only eight wide releases, but six of them earned more than $100 million. Three of those hit $200 million, including Thor: Ragnarok, which earned over $300 million. This year, there are a lot more movies opening in November, but it is a case of quantity over quality. No movie is expected to come close to $300 million and it would take a bit of luck just to have five $100 million hits. The film I’m looking forward to the most is Ralph Breaks the Internet, while it, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald are all aiming for $200 million this month. Fortunately, even if 2018 is behind 2017’s pace by around $300 million, 2018 has built up such a large lead that it should still go into December with an insurmountable lead at the box office.

2017 Awards Season: BAFTA Nominations
January 11th, 2018
The BAFTA nominations were announced and this time The Shape of Water led the way with 12 nominations. The same films appear on many of the lists of nominees, but so far no one film has come to dominate the list. This makes it interesting, to say the least. There’s a good chance no one film will win the majority of prestige awards and that multiple films will have lots of reason to celebrate on February 18th when the awards are handed out.

2017 - Awards Season: Independent Spirit Awards - Nominations
November 22nd, 2017
The Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced yesterday and thus the 2017 Awards Season begins. The movie with the most nominations is Call Me by Your Name, which opens on Friday. This is amazingly good timing. It’s not the only film that should get a financial boost.
