Weekend estimates: Croods still rule

December 13, 2020

The Croods: A New Age

The Croods: A New Age continues to dominate at the box office (relatively speaking) this weekend, with Universal projecting a weekend box office of $3.01 million for a total of $24.26 million to date. Half Brothers is outperforming expectations in second place with a projected $490,000 sophomore weekend, down just 30% from its last outing. More...

The Croods: A New Age

Theater counts: The Croods remains unchallenged

December 10, 2020

The Croods: A New Age

The three widest films from last week remain the same this week as The Croods: A New Age is once again the only film playing in over 2,000 theaters. Half Brothers and Freaky switch positions this week, and are showing in 1,386 and 1,235 venues respectively. Debuting this week from Bleecker Street is Wild Mountain Thyme, arriving in 450 locations. After a string of re-releases during the past few weeks, Walt Disney is quiet this week in comparison, holding over only The Empty Man, The New Mutants and Die Hard—the last of which was re-released last week. Although we do not yet have a theater count, next week we see Fatale and Monster Hunter open wide. Fatale will be the first wide release from Lionsgate since I Still Believe debuted back in March.

Weekend estimates: Croods leads another dismal weekend

December 6, 2020

The Croods: A New Age

The Croods: A New Age will remain top at the box office this weekend, with Universal projecting a $4.4-million weekend as of Sunday morning. That will take the animated adventure past $20 million in total by the end of the day today. That fact pales in comparison to bad news regarding the continued decline in box office receipts. Returning films are falling 12% to 25% short of our model’s pre-weekend predictions. Part of that is down to the post-Thanksgiving decline that’s to be expected, but the continued toll of the pandemic is further dragging on spending. Perhaps the glimmer of good news is that more people are heeding experts’ advice and watching their movies at home. More...

Weekend predictions: Half Brothers, All My Life unlikely to challenge Croods

December 4, 2020

The Croods: A New Age

If 2020 has taught us anything it’s that nothing is certain in life. But one thing we can be fairly confident about this weekend is that The Croods: A New Age will remain top at the box office. Universal’s animated adventure does have some new competition. In fact, there are three new wide releases: Half Brothers (in 1,369 theaters), a re-release of Die Hard (1,172 theaters), and romantic drama All My Life. But those three films combined are unlikely to challenge Croods, and individually they are likely to be far behind it.

Theater counts: The Croods still the widest release in its second week

December 3, 2020

The Croods: A New Age

The Croods: A New Age remains the widest release this week, easily topping Freaky, another Universal film and the week’s second-widest release. Debuting this week are All My Life, and Half Brothers, both also from Universal Pictures/Focus Features, and playing in 970 and 1,357 theaters respectively. Walt Disney is re-releasing Bruce Willis’ Christmas themed action movie, Die Hard to the big screen this week in 1,172 theaters. At this time there are no wide releases on the schedule for the next two weeks, before we see five released on Christmas day, which includes Monster Hunter, News of the World and Wonder Woman 1984.

December preview: Wonder Woman heralds the end of the theatrical window (for now?)

December 1, 2020

Wonder Woman 1984

The worst year for the movie theatrical industry in a century will end with a series of releases that might define the business for the next decade. Only three of the major studios are daring to release films in theaters during what is shaping up to be the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sony Pictures is going the traditional route with Monster Hunter getting an exclusive theatrical release on Christmas Day. Universal’s deals with AMC and Cinemark to allow shortened theatrical windows in return for sharing PVOD revenue have prompted it and its specialty division Focus Features to release four films this holiday season. But all eyes (or many of them, anyway) will be on Warner Bros.’ release of Wonder Woman 1984 simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.

When the studio announced this release strategy back on November 18 there was speculation that, if it worked out well, they might do the same thing with some of their other upcoming films. Today they threw caution to the wind and announced that all of the studio’s 2021 films will be released in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time (in territories where HBO Max is available). While we’re still digesting the news, here are three quick takes on the rationale for Warner Bros. to make this bold leap. More...

Thanksgiving estimates: Croods 2 outperforms expectations with $14-million Thanksgiving debut

November 29, 2020

The Croods: A New Age

The Croods: A New Age is delivering some welcome news at the box office this weekend with an opening that is significantly better than our prediction. In fact, if it hits Universal’s Sunday morning projection of $9.71 million, it will have the best Friday–Sunday weekend since theaters started reopening, beating Tenet’s $9.35 million first full weekend (although note that Warner Bros. published a figure of $20.2 million for Tenet, which included a week of earnings in Canada, and preview screenings in the United States). The reason for this big weekend was the continued attendance of families in movie theaters: 81% of the audience for Croods 2 was either under 18 or a parent bringing a child. More...
