2018 - Awards Season: Golden Globes - Nominations
December 6th, 2018
The Golden Globes nominations are the second major Awards Season set to come out. It is still very early in the year and the predictive value of the Golden Globes is a little suspect, but there are still some things to learn here. For example Vice led the way with six nominations, so its Oscar chances have gone up, but don’t expect it to lead the way when the Oscars nominations are announced.

Limited and VOD Releases: Old Man and the Limited Release
September 27th, 2018
Robert Redford’s swan song, The Old Man and the Gun, leads a group of limited releases this week. It should be the biggest hit on this week’s list and could even become an Awards Season contender. Bad Reputation could also open really well, for a documentary.

Limited and VOD Releases: Will any of the Limited Releases Get Lucky at the Box Office?
September 29th, 2017
This week’s selection of limited releases is mixed. There are a couple of potential Oscar contenders, Lucky and Our Souls at Night, but neither is expected to be a major player at the box office. In fact, Our Souls at Night is playing on Video on Demand, so its box office potential is close to zero. Likewise, Window Horses, Bugs, and I am Another You are all earning 100% positive reviews, but none are expected to find breakout success on the art house scene.

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Pete’s Dragon
December 11th, 2016
Pete’s Dragon opened in late summer and did well domestically. Had it done as well internationally, then it would have been on pace to break even sometime during its home market run. Sadly, it did much worse internationally. Perhaps this means the movie only did well here due to nostalgia for the original film. Is this the case? Or does the movie work on its own?

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
September 6th, 2014
Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the latest in an unending string of hits for Marvel Studios. It was for quite a while the biggest hit of the year, but was recently overtaken by Guardians of the Galaxy. Is this film worth checking out for those who have enjoyed the previous Avengers films? And if you've never seen any of the previous Avengers films, is this a good place to start?

2014 Preview: April
April 1st, 2014
March was stronger than expected when compared to 2013 with four films earning $100 million or more, led by Divergent. (Not all of them have gotten there yet, but they are certain to reach that milestone before they are done their box office runs.) It wasn't a blow-out victory, on the other hand, as a few weekends the ticket sales were lower in 2014 than they were during the same weekend in 2013. April looks really strong with Captain America: The Winter Soldier leading the way. This film should top $200 million over the weekend, while it isn't the only film that should crack the century mark, as Rio 2 is also on track for $100 million. This is great news, as no film last April reached $100 million. Granted, 42 came close and Oblivion wasn't far behind, but The Winter Soldier should earn more than those two films earned combined giving 2014 a comfortable lead over 2013 over the full month.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for February 11th, 2014
February 11th, 2014
It's a strange week on the home market. If you look at the top ten selling new releases on Amazon.com, there are a couple of first run releases, a catalog title, TV on DVD release, and some limited releases. That's basically every category there is. The biggest release is Ender's Game, a film that failed to find an audience in theaters. It barely earned overall positive reviews and it isn't a contender for Pick of the Week. Some of the other best-selling releases are contenders, like The Jungle Book: Blu-ray Diamond Edition or Sherlock: Season Three on DVD or Blu-ray. There are also a few of the smaller releases that were in consideration, including Doctor Who: Story 33: The Moonbase and G.B.F. on DVD. But in the end, I went with Wadjda on Blu-ray Combo Pack for Pick of the Week. One last note, Dry Spell is coming out on Video on Demand. It's a good chance to support ultra-low-budget filmmaking and the reviews I've read have been positive.

2014 Awards Season: Slave Hustles to the Top
December 14th, 2013
Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their Golden Globe nominations this week, and a clear picture is forming. 12 Years a Slave was again the recipient of the most nominations, but this time it was a tie, as it and American Hustle both grabbed seven nominations. If you look down the list of other multi-nominated films, you will find a number of familiar faces.

Limited Releases: Are Any Limited Releases Worth Keeping?
April 5th, 2013
As usual, there is an eclectic mix of limited releases, including some that have earned some advance buzz, like Trance and The Company You Keep, which should help them at the box office. The best reviewed film of the week is Upstream Color, but it is probably too weird to thrive outside of the art house circuit. It might be too weird to thrive within the art house circuit.
