Theater counts: Bullet Train accelerates to the top as it and Easter Sunday open wide
August 4th, 2022
Like last week, two new wide releases grace movie theaters across North America this weekend in the form of the violent action-comedy Bullet Train, and holiday comedy, Easter Sunday. Opening in 4,317 theaters, Bullet Train is directed by David Leitch and contains a large ensemble cast, led by Brad Pitt as an experienced but unlucky assassin named “Ladybug”. Co-starring with Pitt is Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, and Andrew Koji among others. The Japanese-set film which is based on Kōtarō Isaka’s dark novel “MariaBeetle” will be available on both traditional and IMAX screens. Easter Sunday, which will debut in 3,175 locations, stars Jo Koy as a man who returns home for an Easter celebration with his riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family.

Great and Powerful Streaming Releases to Love
May 16th, 2020
There are several interesting new releases on the streaming platforms this week. The biggest of these is Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which debuted on Disney+ on Friday. The latest stand-up comic special by Patton Oswalt, I Love Everything, hits Netflix on Tuesday, and I bet it will be great. There are also two TV shows worth checking out, The Great on Hulu and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power on Netflix.

Featured TV on DVD Review: MST3K: Season 12: The Gauntlet
November 24th, 2019
MST3K revival hit Netflix last April and I loved it. Fortunately for me, enough other people loved it that it got another season, The Gauntlet. What is The Gauntlet? And why can’t I say that word without doing the silly hand jester Kinga does? I can’t answer the second question, but keep reading for the answer to the first one.

Home Market Releases for February 19th, 2019
February 20th, 2019
The fall smash hits and the Oscar contenders are starting to come out in full force, making it a great time on the home market. This week, we have one of the biggest hits of the fall, A Star is Born; one of the best movies of the year, Can You Ever Forgive Me?; and the Anime that arguably solidified Moe as powerhouse genre, K-ON: Complete Collection Premium Box Set. Of the three, I like K-ON the most, but I admit that price will scare away a lot of people, so Can You Ever Forgive Me? is the better choice for Pick of the Week.

2018 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part II - TV on DVD Releases
December 5th, 2018
The first installment of our Holiday Gift Guide dealt with First Run wide releases, which was dominated by super heroes, again. This week, we look at TV on DVD releases, specifically first seasons and Megasets. I limited this list to two types, because you don’t need me to tell you if someone will want the sixth season of a show. If they liked the first five, then season six is likely a good gift. However, like last year, I’m going to start this list with an exception. Sort of. On a side note, originally, I was going to lead with K-On: Limited Edition Box Set, but that got pushed back till February. You can still buy it and give them a print-out of the receipt at Christmas. “Merry Christmas. You’re gift will arrive in two months.” ... Yes, I’ve done that in the past. No, it's not tacky.

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Please Stand By
May 1st, 2018
When Please Stand By opened in limited release, it missed the Mendoza Line by a large margin. However, it was also a Video on Demand, so its box office numbers were essentially immaterial. Now that it is out on DVD or Blu-ray is it worth picking up? Or is it strictly a rental?

Featured VOD Review: MST3K: Season 11, Volume 3
November 26th, 2017
I haven’t reviewed all of the MST3K revival show and it has been a while since I last reviewed the show. However, this weekend was the perfect weekend to finish season 11 for three reasons. Firstly, I have nothing else to review. Secondly, the Christmas episode is part of the final five episodes. And finally, Netflix announced this week that season two is on its way. Yes! Do the final five episodes of season 11 give us hope for season 12? Does the season end on a high note? Or are we going into season 12 hoping this season was just the creators finding their footing?

Featured VOD Review: MST3K: Season 11, Volume 2
May 14th, 2017
MST3K revival hit Netflix in April and I reviewed the first four episodes at that time. I only reviewed the first four episodes, partially because it matched the previous MST3K reviews I’ve done, but also because the show was made without binge watching in mind. This time around, I’m reviewing the next five episodes starting with The Beast of Hollow Mountain and ending with Yongary. Are these episodes as good as the first four? Or does the season start to peter out too quickly?

Featured VOD Review: MST3K: Season 11
April 17th, 2017
There were rumors about MST3K being revived for a while, but it wasn’t until the Kickstarter materialized that I really thought it would make a comeback. I was one of nearly 50,000 backers who have been patiently waiting more than a year for the revival to start airing. On Friday, all 14 episodes of the show debuted on Netflix. I’m going to review the first four episodes of the show for two reasons. Firstly, the creators recommended not binging on the show. Secondly, it matches the old DVD reviews I’ve done.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: The Confirmation

The Confirmation opened in limited release, and Video on Demand in March. Like most films that debut on Video on Demand, this one went nowhere at the box office. Will it do better on DVD / Blu-ray?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Veep: Season 4
April 17th, 2016
Veep stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who at the beginning of the show, was the Vice President of the United States. Things have changed. So far during the show's four-year run, it has earned excellent reviews and this past year was one of the biggest winners at the Emmys. Does it deserve this praise? Or am I in the minority here?

Limited and VOD Releases: Limited Releases are Very Special
March 18th, 2016
Of the seven films on this week's list, five of them are earning excellent reviews and one of the other two is a Bollywood film with no reviews. Midnight Special was supposed to open wide, but that's not happening now. It could still find an audience in theaters. Additionally, Krisha is being released by A24 and that distributor has a very good track record.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Drunk History: Season 3
February 29th, 2016
I featured Drunk History on a Holiday Gift Guide and I stand by that recommendation. It's got a really simple set-up and a better than expected execution. On the other hand, I was worried that it's high concept meant a really short shelf life. Would I grow tired of the show after just three seasons? Or is it still entertaining?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Burn Notice: Season Six
August 6th, 2013
The latest season of Burn Notice arrived a little late, and by a little I mean more than a full month. Since it is one of my favorite summer shows, I was eagerly awaiting its arrival. But now that I've seen it, was it worth the wait?

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 2
November 13th, 2012
When the Pixar Short Film Collection, Volume 1 came out five years ago, I was super excited. Not only do I love Pixar's theatrical release, but I like short films in general and there are so few places to get them. I'm less excited about volume 2, because Pixar has been releasing its short films on DVD and Blu-ray, so if you have been keeping up with their releases, you have this already. But, is there more to this release than just the short films?

Emancipation of Limited Releases
November 9th, 2012
There's quite a few limited releases coming out this week, but the list is dominated by Lincoln, which should not only be the biggest hit of the week, but it is virtually guaranteed to expand wide and has a real shot at being the big winner at the Oscars next year. Unfortunately, it is the only limited release with a real shot at mainstream success. Starlet is a long shot, but it deserves to find an audience in theaters.
