Theater counts: The Marvels holds on as widest release despite a flurry of newcomers
November 16th, 2023
After a much lower than expected start for The Marvels last weekend, the latest Marvel film will remain the widest release this week, while four new wide releases make their way into theaters in time for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Marvels will hold steady in 4,030 locations this week after collecting just over $46 million during its first three days. While an impressive haul by most standards, it posted the lowest earning opening weekend for an MCU film to date.

Streaming Releases: The Doctor Will See You Now
June 5th, 2020
This is not a strong week for streaming releases. The first week of the month tends to be dominated by releases of movies and TV shows that are sometimes decades old, but are available on a particular streaming service for the first time. Actual new releases are pushed to the side as a result. This week, the biggest and best new release is Shirley on Hulu, but I also wanted to shine the spotlight on an older release that is worth your time and money, Doc Martin. It is free on Amazon Prime.

Limited and Virtual Releases: Shirley, You Can’t be Serious
June 5th, 2020
It is actually a busy week for limited and virtual releases with a handful of higher profile films hitting theaters. This includes Shirley, which has enough appeal that it could have expanded wide, and earned some level of mainstream success under normal circumstances. Tommaso has more limited appeal, but it could have been a hit on the art house circuit. As theaters open up around the country, this weekend is going to be the biggest test yet of how the theatrical market might grow in the next few months.

2020 Preview: February
February 1st, 2020
We had a great start to the year, sort of. Most films that opened / expanded wide in January are going to miss expectations; however, Bad Boys for Life and 1917 are so much stronger than anticipated that they alone will more than make up the difference. Looking forward, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is almost guaranteed to be the biggest hit of the month. There are two questions. Firstly, is it going to top Bad Boys for Life and become the biggest hit of the year so far? Secondly, is it going to be the only $100 million hit of month? Hopefully the answers to those questions are yes and no respectively, but no to both is would still be good news overall. Sonic the Hedgehog is looking better than before and frankly Paramount needs a hit after a very troubling 2019. Meanwhile, there are several midlevel hits that could help the overall box office. Last February was a mixed month with some hits, like How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, but some disappointing results as well, like from The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. I think it will be a close race in the year-over-year competition with 2020 winning some weeks and losing others.

Her Smell is arguably the biggest hit on this week’s list of new films in limited release. Meanwhile, Penguin Highway has 100% positive reviews and Wild Nights With Emily isn’t that far behind. Hopefully all three, and maybe some others on this week’s list, can find an audience.

Home Market Releases for January 30th, 2018
January 31st, 2018
This is one of the worse times of year for the home market. Until we start getting the holiday blockbusters landing on DVD / Blu-ray, there’s not much to talk about. That’s not to say there are no good releases, as God’s Own Country, The Square, and Steven Universe: Season One are all easily worth picking up. There are just no big releases. For example, the Pick of the Week goes to Professor Marston & The Wonder Women on Blu-ray, which was sadly ignored by moviegoers when it first hit theaters.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Mad Men: Season Seven, Part Two
October 25th, 2015
I got a chance to review the last Mad Men release as the Complete Series Megaset came out the same week as the DVD and Blu-ray for Season Seven, Part Two. I requested the Megaset, but I got the final two-disc release. I hate reviewing partial seasons, especially when it is the second half of a season where I didn't review the first half. These tend to be nothing but spoilers, making it nearly impossible to review. Is that this case here? Yes. So we can't get into details, as we hit spoilers right away. Fortunately, this is the end of the series, so details are less important than seeing what happens to the characters and if their arcs had satisfying conclusions. Is that the case?

Limited and VOD Releases: Race to the Top
August 28th, 2015
There are practically no films on this week's list that I think have a shot at box office success. That's not to say there are no films earning great reviews, but all of them have something that will hold them back. Most of the time, it's a simultaneous Video on Demand run. This includes Turbo Kid (Video on Demand); Z for Zachariah (Video on Demand); and Queen of Earth (Video on Demand). All could find audiences, but they will find them on the home market.

Limited Releases: Bird is the Word
October 17th, 2014
It's an excellent week for limited releases with several films earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. This includes a couple that are also earning really loud buzz. Of these, Birdman is probably going to win the weekend race on the Per Theater Chart, while Dear White People should also be a hit. Diplomacy, Housebound, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, and others also deserve to find audiences, but not all will do so for various reasons (wrong genre, opening in Video on Demand, etc.).

Limited Releases are Strange
August 22nd, 2014
It's a short list this week with only a handful of films. Fortunately, there are two films opening in limited release that are earning strong buzz and great reviews: Love is Strange and The One I Love. Both should find audiences in theaters. Another film, To Be Takei, is also earning great reviews and could do better than most documentaries.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 7th, 2014
January 5th, 2014
It is a relatively slow week this week. That's not to say there are no releases worth picking up, in fact, there's a close race for Pick of the Week. It's just none of the releases were monster hits at the theaters. This includes a couple of documentaries, The Act of Killing and Inequality for All, as well as a couple of TV on DVD releases, Archer: Season Four and Being Human: Complete Third Season. However, in the end, I went with We Are What We Are on DVD or Blu-ray for Pick of the Week. Meanwhile, Being Human: Complete Third Season on DVD or Blu-ray earns Puck of the Week, for the best Canadian release.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Mad Men: Season Six
November 13th, 2013
Season Six of Mad Men is the penultimate season for the show. This is bittersweet for fans, because a lot of them will be losing their favorite show. Also, it makes the expectations really high. Fans will demand the show go off on high note and any sign of a decrease in quality might send them off in a panic. Are there reasons to panic? Or does it look like the seventh and final season will be a great send off for the show?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Mad Men: Season Five
October 15th, 2012
Mad Men was not a breakout hit when it first aired in 2006. Granted, it was AMC's most watched series premiere, but it still couldn't crack 1 million total viewers. This most recent season saw it crack 1 million in the prime demographic for the first time ever. The show is more popular than it has ever been, but is the quality also going up?
