How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

It is a very strange week on the home market. There are two $100 million hits, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and The Upside, a midlevel hit, Isn’t it Romantic, and then practically nothing. The week’s releases are more top-heavy than any other week I can remember. Fortunately, the biggest release of the week, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, is also one of the best wide releases of the year so far and it is easily the Pick of the Week. In fact, it would likely have won that title even if it was a busier than average week. More...

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

It is yet another slow week on the home market with very few first-run releases of note. There are three contenders for Pick of the Week: Better Call Saul: Season 4, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part on 4K Ultra HD, and My Hero Academia: Season Three, Part One. It is too close to call, so I’m declaring a three-way tie. More...

Her Smell

While there were no breakout hits on this week’s theater average chart, but there are few members of the $10,000 club. Her Smell led the way with an average of $12,314 in three theaters. Teen Spirit did well with an average of $10,905 in four theaters. Meanwhile, Wild Nights with Emily just managed to grab a spot in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,070 in three theaters. Weekend Estimates: Shazam Stops New Releases Cold

April 14th, 2019

Shazam

Shazam really bounced back from a poor Friday performance. So much so that it almost match our prediction with an estimated $25.14 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $94.31 million. Internationally, the film is projected to earn $35.9 million on 23,752 screens in 79 markets to push its international total to $163.9 million. This means its worldwide total rose past $250 million after just two weeks of release. The film will have no trouble breaking even after a run like this, even with Avengers: Endgame looming large. Penguin Highway

Her Smell is arguably the biggest hit on this week’s list of new films in limited release. Meanwhile, Penguin Highway has 100% positive reviews and Wild Nights With Emily isn’t that far behind. Hopefully all three, and maybe some others on this week’s list, can find an audience. More...
