Theater counts: Venom fends off a host of newcomers to remain widest release

November 7th, 2024

Venom: The Last Dance

Despite the arrival of seven wide releases, Venom: The Last Dance remains the box office frontrunner, securing just short of $26 million over the weekend, taking its domestic total to $89.85 million, while currently enjoying a 13-day total of nearly $97 million. The Venom franchise now holds a global cume of $1.68 billion, with a $323 million contribution from this latest installment. This week sees the debut of five new wide releases, all poised to take on the current box office champ. More...

Theater counts: Creed III punches its way into 4,007 theaters

March 2nd, 2023

Creed III

The third installment of the Creed franchise, and ninth overall film in the Rocky film series, Creed III enters the fray this week as the widest release, and the only film showing in over 4,000 locations. 4,007 of them, to be precise. The sports drama, starring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, is also Jordan’s directorial debut. The opening count is a Rocky franchise record.

Also opening in wide release is the action-comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre. Starting out in 2,168 locations, the movie features an all-star ensemble cast including Jason Statham, Hugh Grant, Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Josh Hartnett and Bugzy Malone. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the movie follows super spy Orson Fortune (played by Statham) and his team of top operatives as they recruit Hollywood’s biggest movie star to help them on an undercover mission to stop a billionaire arms broker (played by Grant) from selling a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order. 2020 Preview: January

January 1st, 2020

Bad Boys for Life

It’s the year 2020, the year where we find out how many times you can say, “Well, hindsight is 20/20.” before you get punched. On the positive side, while December wasn’t a great month, it was good enough to help 2019 end on a positive note, a positive note that should continue into January. There are no real potential monster hits coming out this month, but there are three films that have a real shot at $100 million domestically. These are, in alphabetical order, 1917, which will rely on Awards Season to get to the century mark. Bad Boys for Life will have a much, much easier time getting to $100 million, assuming people still care about the franchise 17 years later. Finally, Dolittle is looking like a disaster with a really troubled production; however, a $100 million run isn’t out of the question and if it can get there, it will at least save face. As for last January, Glass was the biggest hit of the month in terms of raw dollars, but The Upside was more impressive, as it is one the biggest hits in STX Entertainment’s history. We need two of the three potential $100 million hits to reach that mark to keep pace with last year, but we also have one more weekend to get there. More...

2017 Awards Season: BAFTA Nominations

January 11th, 2018

The Shape of Water

The BAFTA nominations were announced and this time The Shape of Water led the way with 12 nominations. The same films appear on many of the lists of nominees, but so far no one film has come to dominate the list. This makes it interesting, to say the least. There’s a good chance no one film will win the majority of prestige awards and that multiple films will have lots of reason to celebrate on February 18th when the awards are handed out. More...

2018 Preview: January

January 1st, 2018

Paddington 2

2017 wasn’t a good year. It started out well and ended on a high note, but the summer was a disaster and that proved to be too much for the rest of the year to overcome. Fortunately, The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle are still doing very well and will help January get off to a fast start. Unfortunately, the biggest new release of January is Paddington 2 and it isn’t expected to match its predecessor at the box office; it certainly won’t top $100 million domestically. It is unlikely any of the Oscar contenders will hit the century mark in January either. This is really bad news, as last January, we had a new release, Split and an Oscar contender, Hidden Figures, which both topped that milestone with ease. 2018 should get off to a faster start in the first two weeks, but overall, this month will end with a loss.
