Notes and Reactions...

  • While La La Land earned the most nominations, I think you could argue that Moonlight was the biggest winner of the night, as its six nominations came from more prestigious categories.
  • Deadpool earned two nominations, including one for Ryan Reynolds. I saw someone online saying this was proof that the Golden Globes are worthless. I think it is just the opposite. It’s proof that the Golden Globes got it right. You don’t ignore one of the funniest movies of the year, just because it is a comic book movie.
  • On the other hand, The Nice Guys should have gotten a nod as well.
  • Some people thought I was crazy when I said The Edge of Seventeen was earning some Awards Season buzz, but Hailee Steinfeld picked up a Golden Globe nomination, so who’s crazy now?
  • Some are arguing that Sully was snubbed, but I’m not convinced that’s the case. It did earn great reviews, but there are quite a few other dramas that topped it. Likewise, Silence was another film that people are saying was snubbed, but I hadn’t heard any serious Awards Season buzz from the movie.
  • I would argue that Hidden Figures was a bigger snub, as it only got two nods, when it should have gotten much more.
  • Sally Field was snubbed for Hello, My Name Is Doris, which I think confirms she’s this year’s Lily Tomlin. I think I will give up now, so I can avoid further disappointment.
