Theater counts: Black Adam easily repeats while Prey for the Devil arrives for Halloween
October 27th, 2022
To no great surprise, Black Adam will once again be the week’s widest release in North America as the superhero feature will retain all of the 4,402 theaters from its debut weekend in its second outing. The Dwayne Johnson movie snagged a very respectable $67 million over its first three days and has settled in with just over $80 million in domestic earnings and a global take of nearly $156 million so far. This week sees two new films opening in wide release: the pre-Halloween horror flick Prey for the Devil and Call Jane.

Theater counts: Don’t Worry Darling repeats, while a trio of new wide releases land in theaters
September 29th, 2022
Last week was dominated by newcomer Don’t Worry Darling as the 1950s set thriller earned $19.35 million in its opening weekend from 4,113 locations (which included a solid $3.1 million from Monday IMAX and Thursday evening previews) . After accumulating $24.35 million in its first six days, Don’t Worry Darling adds eight cinemas this week, bringing the current count to 4,121. It will likely be one week and done at the top of the box office charts, but for at least one more week the film outpaces the pack regarding its viewing availability.

Theater counts: Ghostbusters set for second-widest opening of the year
November 18th, 2021
After an array of release date changes, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is finally here. The latest in the Ghostbusters franchise is set to launch in 4,315 theaters, only trailing No Time to Die’s 4,407 venues as the largest opening this year, and overtaking both Jungle Cruise (4,310) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (4,300). The supernatural comedy is directed by Jason Reitman and stars a plethora of Hollywood talent, including the familiar faces of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and archival footage of the late Harold Ramis as the serious Dr. Egon Spengler. Also new in wide release this week is the latest from Warner Bros. in King Richard. The biographical drama follows the life of Richard Williams, the father of tennis icons Venus and Serena Williams. The film opens in 3,302 locations while simultaneously being available for viewing on HBO Max.

Limited and VOD Releases: Sign Your Name. Here
April 7th, 2017
It is a busy week for limited releases with more than a dozen titles on this week’s list. This includes a quartet of releases with good reviews and loud buzz. Gifted’s reviews are good, but likely not good enough for limited release. That said, it has a shot at becoming a sleeper hit. Their Finest is a stellar British World War II dramedy, but the cast is more famous in the U.K. than here. Your Name is arguably the best film on this week’s list and it is a monster hit worldwide. However, it is playing in over 300 theaters and that might turn out to be too many. This leaves Colossal as the film with the best shot at mainstream success. Its reviews are not the best, but the combination of reviews, cast, buzz, and commercial viability is.

Featured Blu-ray Review: Aliens: 30th Anniversary
October 17th, 2016
The original Alien movie can be described as a haunted house movie set in space, only with an alien instead of a supernatural entity attacking the cast. Aliens, on the other hand, loses nearly all of its tension and instead goes for an action-oriented approach. Does it work? Oh hell yeah. This is one of the best films from the 1980s and it is a must have. Is this 30th Anniversary Blu-ray worth picking up if you have the box set? That’s an interesting question.

2015 Preview: March
March 1st, 2015
February was strong thanks to The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and Fifty Shades of Grey, both of which beat expectations. This March could actually be even better, as there are three or four films that have a decent shot at earning $100 million or more. The top film will likely be Cinderella, which has a real shot at $200 million. Insurgent will almost assuredly get beyond the $100 million mark, while Get Hard, Home, and perhaps Chappie will also get to the century mark. Last March, there were four $100 million hits, led by Divergent, which pulled in $150 million. While this March should be better than February, I'm not sure it will be better than last March. I don't think March 2015 will be much worse than last year, but I think its percentage lead will be chipped away at by the end of the month.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Vamps
November 12th, 2012
Vamps was written and directed by Amy Heckerling and stars Alicia Silverstone. The pair previously worked together on Clueless, which is arguably the highlight of the careers of both women. This film won't be as big as Clueless was in theaters (although bizarrely, it did better in its second weekend than its first). But will it find an audience on the home market?
