There were plenty of new releases on this week's sales chart, nine in fact, but they generally didn't perform as strongly as last week's group. Leading the way was Speed Racer with 406,000 units sold, and $8.40 million in revenue generated, which is relatively better than its theatrical run.

There were almost as many new releases to reach the top 30 on the rental charts as there were on the sales chart this week, but there were some key differences, including the top spot. The number one rental of the week was Made of Honor, which generated about 20% more revenue than Speed Racer.

New releases dominated the sales chart this week with eight of them charting, including all of the top five. The new number one film was Forbidden Kingdom, which sold 550,000 units during its opening week and generated $12.70 million in sales.

New releases were not as plentiful on the rental charts as much as on the sales chart this week, but we still had a new number one as Baby Mama beat Forbidden Kingdom by nearly 25%.

TV on DVD is at its peak for the year, just in time for the new season to start. However, because last season was cut short by the writers' strike, and so many studios are not taking that into account in the pricing, there are fewer releases at are contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. But we do have a worthy recipient of the award: Fist of Legend - Buy from Amazon, the latest release from Dragon Dynasty. Also, while the week was slow on top, it was busy overall, so much so that we had to split the week's list into two parts again. Part II can be found here.

It was a good news / bad news weekend, but let's focus on the good first. Iron Man beat expectations and that helped the overall box office top $125 million over the weekend. This was 21% lower than last weekend, but, more importantly, it was 18% more than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 is still behind, but it is cutting into 2007's lead and is now down just $2.93 billion to $3.01 billion.

Speed Racer tries to maintain 2008's momentum; however, there's little chance it will match Iron Man's opening, or even its sophomore stint. In fact, many pundits don't think it will be able to match Iron Man's opening during its entire run. That said, the combined weight of the new releases and the holds could lift this weekend over last year's total, which is the real goal at this point.

Summer started with a bang, and a whimper... it depends on what you compare it to. Over the weekend, the box office totaled $159 million in ticket sales, which is 75% more than last weekend. However, it is also 16% less than the same weekend last year when Spider-man 3 smashed the record for biggest opening weekend. Compared to expectations, this was a great start; compared to last year, 2008 continues to struggle.

Summer unofficially starts this weekend with the release of Iron Man, which actually opened on Thursday night. There is little doubt that it will finish on top of the box office chart this weekend. The real question is how far up the all-time chart it will go.

The last weekend before the summer blockbuster rush turned out to be a positive one with only one film missing Thursday's prediction. This helped the overall box office to $91 million over the weekend, although that was 4% less than last weekend. More importantly, it was 17% more than the same weekend last year and that helped reduce 2007's lead over 2008 $2.66 billion to $2.59 billion.

Baby Mama won the weekend with a solid $18.27 million opening, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
That's a little above expectations, and contributed to a strong weekend overall, with a projected total gross for all movies of $91 million -- 17% up from the same weekend last year.
Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay also made a good start with an estimated $14.57 million, which is almost as much as Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle made in its entire theatrical run.

Two comedies with vastly different target audiences are opening this weekend, as is a thriller with perhaps no target audience. None of the new releases look likely to light up the box office charts, especially with the looming release of Iron Man less than a week away. That said, limited expenses and lowered expectations should keep the studios happy, for the most part.

It's the final weekend before the summer blockbuster season starts and the target film is Baby Mama. I should have given away Inside on DVD this week and not last week. It would have been a perfect, if amazingly twisted connection. However, the prizes this week are excellent. In order to win, one must simply predict Baby Mama's three-day, opening weekend box office.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a Baby Mama prize pack including T-shirt, poster, hat, etc., as well as Flash Point on DVD.
Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win The Upright Citizens Brigade: Asssscat! and Comic Relief: The Greatest... and the Latest.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

April is not a good month to release a movie. In fact, it is one of the worst months to release a movie, especially late in the month as the May mega-releases begin to loom large on the horizon and you don't have a lot of time to pull in some cash before summer starts and the competition becomes too much to handle. There are, however, a few limited release this month that have a real shot at expanding. Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? could reach $10 million, which would be amazing for a documentary, but it is doubtful it will expand wide.
