Home Market Releases for September 11th, 2018

September 10th, 2018

Hearts Beat Loud

It is not a very busy week on the home market. Ocean’s 8 is the biggest release of the week, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender. In fact, there was only one real contender for that title, Hearts Beat Loud on Blu-ray. That said, Ocean’s 8 is worth picking up, as is Modern Family: Season Nine. More...

Featured Blu-ray Review: Tideland

September 10th, 2018

Tideland

Terry Gilliam has a mixed record when it comes to critics and box office numbers. This isn’t always his fault. The studio interference he dealt with during Brazil was legendary. However, when he’s left on his own, he can get carried away and create some monstrosities as well. Tideland was 100% independently made, so he had full control. Did this work out? Or does he need a studio to rein in his worst impulses? More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 20th, 2015

January 21st, 2015

It is another very shallow week on the home market with only a few releases that are really worth considering. The biggest release is Lucy, which is absolutely worth picking up the Blu-ray Combo Pack, assuming you are willing to ignore the bad science. Likewise, The Boxtrolls the second biggest hit and the 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack is worth picking up, if you like stop-motion animation. As for Pick of the Week Contenders, there are a trio of such films: Coherence on DVD, The Drop on DVD or Blu-ray, and The Mule on DVD or Blu-ray. In the end it was a coin toss and Coherence won. Between Zero and 20,000 Limited Releases

September 19th, 2014

The Zero Theorem poster

It's an overly busy week for limited releases with nearly two-dozen films on this week's list. There are a number of films on this week's list that are earning outstanding reviews, like 20,000 Days on Earth, or strong buzz, like The Zero Theorem. But there are not a lot earning both. Films like Stop the Pounding Heart or The Guest will likely not live up to their Tomatometer Scores. Tracks is probably the film with the best chance at breakout success. More...

2012 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part IV

December 19th, 2012

There are only a few days left till Christmas and we are officially in the panic zone for gift shopping. This week we have our final installment of our annual Holiday Gift Guide. Part I dealt with first run releases, Part II dealt with TV on DVD releases, Part III dealt with limited releases, foreign titles, and classics. This week, we deal with some music, books, games, as well as releases from the first three parts that I forgot the first time around. As always, there are quite a few in that last category. (I also use this time to burn off some releases that arrived late. This way I can get through all of the late reviews quicker than normal and actually have enough time to celebrate Christmas.)
