DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 20th, 2015

January 21, 2015

It is another very shallow week on the home market with only a few releases that are really worth considering. The biggest release is Lucy, which is absolutely worth picking up the Blu-ray Combo Pack, assuming you are willing to ignore the bad science. Likewise, The Boxtrolls the second biggest hit and the 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack is worth picking up, if you like stop-motion animation. As for Pick of the Week Contenders, there are a trio of such films: Coherence on DVD, The Drop on DVD or Blu-ray, and The Mule on DVD or Blu-ray. In the end it was a coin toss and Coherence won.

Annabelle - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A spin-off of The Conjuring that lacked nearly everything that made the original so good. On the other hand, it was a huge hit, so obviously a lot of people wanted to see it.

Babymetal: Live at Budokan-Red Night & Black Night Apocalypse - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I'm pretty sure it would be cheaper to import it from CD Japan.

Bet's a Bet - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I put in my request for this DVD, but the screener hasn't arrived yet. I know almost nothing about it. It isn't on Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb. Wow.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Adua and Her Friends, The Atticus Institute, La Belle Captive, By the Gun, A Certain Scientific Railgun: Complete Season 1, Cheek to Cheek Live, Little Busters Refrain, Little House of the Prairie: Season Four, Love Is The Devil, May in the Summer, Muv Luv Alternative: Collection 1, My Winnipeg, On Golden Pond, The Palm Beach Story, The Pirates, Track the Man Down, War and Peace, Weapon, Woman They Almost Lynched, and World for Ransom
The list of secondary Blu-ray releases seem to lean towards Anime more than most weeks.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: The Boxtrolls
There's only one 3D Blu-ray release this week, but that's better than most week. Plus, I got to review it.

The Boxtrolls - Buy from Amazon: DVD or 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack
I got to do a 3D review! I can't remember the last time I got to do a 3D review. Additionally, this movie picked up an Oscar nomination, so that's a good sign. Does the film deserve the Oscar nomination? Is it still worth checking out even if it doesn't? Read our review to find out.

Also coming out this week is a Laika Triple-Shot.

Coherence - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A group of friends have a dinner party when a comet passing overhead. Afterward, weird things start to happen. I was hoping to get a screener to review, but if it is going to arrive, it will arrive late. The reviews are excellent, so just based on the reviews I think it is safe to recommend checking out this movie. It is worth picking up, if you like more mind-bending films or a fan of the cast.

The Drop - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned 89% positive reviews, but opened in 809 theaters, which is a really awkward theater count. It managed a spot in the top ten and earned $10 million during its theatrical run, which is better than most films that open semi-wide manage. Extras include an audio commentary track, deleted scenes, and featurettes. It's worth picking up, especially if you like the cast.

The Green Prince - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A documentary about the son of a Hamas leader who became an informant for the Israeli intelligence. The reviews are right on the border between good and great. If you are interested in the subject, then it is worth checking out, but start with a rental.

The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This documentary earned stunning reviews and even picked up a WGA nomination. If you are a fan of documentaries or online activism, this is worth picking up.

Life's a Breeze - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is an Irish film that opened in limited release on on Video on Demand. I don't know what its VoD numbers were, but its theatrical numbers were terrible. Will it perform better on the home market? Check out our review for my opinion.

Lucy - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This was one of the biggest surprise hits of the summer, especially on the worldwide box office. Did it deserve this success? Or did it benefit heavily from the weak competition? Check out our review to find out.

The Mule - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An Australian film that earned amazing reviews; however, it was a Video on Demand release and earned almost nothing at the box office. Extras include deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes featurettes. It's at least worth a rental and likely worth picking up.

Rudderless - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I put in a request for this DVD, but the screener has not yet arrived. The reviews were good, but not great. It is also William H. Macy's directorial debut, which could be a selling point for some. I think it is worth checking out, but until I watch it, I can't really say if it is worth buying.

Tim Minchin & The Heritage Orchestra - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Tim Minchin is an Australian comedian / musician who is great. I haven't seen a full set of his, but he's got a number of YouTube videos that I've watched so much I put them on my favorites list.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Tough Love - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Why does this exist?

White Bird in a Blizzard - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned some good buzz, but failed to win over most critics and really failed to make an impact in theaters. Was the early buzz correct? Or were the critics right? Read our review for my opinion.

Wolves - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I might get a screener for this to review. I really hope it is better than its reviews would indicate.

The Zero Theorem - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The latest from Terry Gilliam was a little too out there for audience members and it split critics. Extras include a quartet of behind-the-scenes / making of featurettes and it is worth picking up for fans of Terry Gilliam's more mind-bending works.
