Limited and VOD Releases: Plan to see a Limited Release
May 20th, 2016
It's a slow week for limited releases with the total films on this week's list in the single-digits. Of these, only Maggie's Plan is likely going to be a hit in theaters. There are a few others that could do well on the home market.

Limited and VOD Releases: Say Hello to Limited Release
March 11th, 2016
There are quite a few limited releases on this week's list that are earning excellent reviews and / or substantial buzz. This includes Hello, My Name is Doris, which I really hope does well. Boom Bust Boom, City of Gold, Eye in the Sky, and Marguerite are all worth checking out in theaters. Most of the rest are worth a rental on VOD.

Limited and VOD Releases: Exorcising Your Options
July 24th, 2015
Every once and a while, I feel the need to apologize for the pun in the headline. This is one of those weeks. It is also one of those weeks where I can't find a limited release that has a good chance at earning some mainstream success. Unexpected is the biggest release, but its reviews suggest it will do better on Video on Demand than in theaters. There are a few documentaries that might do well on the art house circuit, but it is unlikely that any have what it takes to find mainstream success.

Featured TV on DVD Review: Houdini
October 6th, 2014
Houdini is a two-part TV mini-series that first aired at the beginning of last month. This week, it hits the home market on DVD or Blu-ray. Is it worth checking out for those who are interesting in the life of Harry Houdini? Is it worth checking out for those who know little about Harry Houdini?

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: The Grand Budapest Hotel
June 28th, 2014
The Grand Budapest Hotel is the latest film from auteur director, Wes Anderson, and it is also his biggest box office hit. I liked some of his earlier films, but after The Life Aquatic and The Darjeeling Limited, I didn't consider myself a fan of his work. Then I saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom and I loved both. Because of this, I was super excited to see The Grand Budapest Hotel and its box office success caused my expectations to rise even more. Did they rise too high? Is this Wes Anderson's best movie, as well as his biggest hit?

2013 Preview: March
March 1st, 2013
February is over, and for the most part, we should be very happy it is done and buried. The biggest hit of the month turned out to be Identity Thief, which will cross $100 million shortly. There were also a couple of impressive midlevel hits, like Warm Bodies and Escape from Planet Earth, but for the most part, it was miss after miss. This is bad news for March, which is not only dealing with a slumping 2013 box office, but will be compared with a strong March of 2012. Last March started with The Lorax, which earned more than $200 million. There's a good chance no March release this year will reach this milestone. Last March was also the month The Hunger Games opened, which earned more than $400 million. There's a chance the top three films opening this month won't earn that much combined. 2013 is going to take a beating in the year-over-year comparison and it is already $100 million behind last year's pace.
