Theater counts: Dune makes landfall in North America
October 21, 2021
After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last month and rolling out in 36 international markets, Dune has finally reached domestic theaters. The feature adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel showcases an all-star ensemble cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Jason Momoa, among others. The film, directed by Denis Villeneuve, has a budget of $165m will open in an estimated 4,000 theaters, including IMAX locations and streaming via HBO Max. Dune has scored just over $116 million internationally.
Also new in wide release this week is the computer-animated science fiction comedy, Ron’s Gone Wrong. The movie starring Jack Dylan Grazer about a wonderful walking, talking, digitally-connected ’bot who sweeps the world and becomes every kid’s new best friend will launch in 3,560 locations. Last week’s box office winner, Halloween Kills adds 22 locations this week, bringing the count to 3,727 theaters. The latest Halloween-franchise film has scored just shy of $57 million in its first six days of release. Dropping from 4,407 locations to 3,807 this week, No Time to Die is still competitive at the box office, running neck and neck for daily top film against Halloween Kills over the past few days. Dune should eclipse both of them though.
New in limited release this week is the latest from Wes Anderson, The French Dispatch. The film features an array of top Hollywood talent and Anderson regulars, including Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jeffrey Wright, and is being released in 52 locations…
Looking ahead to next week we see the arrival of four wide releases. While none of them will likely have the expansive theater count of a Dune, or No Time to Die, there will be a plethora of genres to choose from. Arriving just in time for the Halloween weekend, the horror film Antlers, starring Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons will debut in an estimated 2,700 theaters. Also new next week is A Mouthful of Air, the latest drama from Sony Pictures. The film starring Amanda Seyfried and Finn Wittrock is set to launch in an estimated 800 locations. Lastly, the anime hit My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission and the psychological-thriller, Last Night in Soho hit theaters.
