Star Trek: Discovery: Season Two

There are not many new releases on this week’s list, but there are several that are contenders for Pick of the Week. The two leading contenders are The Farewell and Star Trek: Discovery: Season Two. The former is the better show, but it is close, meanwhile, the latter has much better extras, giving it the slight advantage overall. On a side note, Yesterday Was a Lie was also in the competition for Pick of the Week. It didn’t quite win, but its Blu-ray deserves to be seen by a lot more people.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This sequel isn’t as good as the original was, not in terms of reviews or at the box office. That said, if you liked the first one enough to buy it, then this one is at least worth a rental.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
This film was a huge improvement over the original in terms of reviews, but it collapsed at the box office barely earning more domestically than the first film opened with. If you or your kids liked the first movie, then this one is worth picking up. Just don’t expect the franchise to become a trilogy.

The Farewell

The Farewell - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film earned nearly perfect reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and became one of the highest grossing limited releases of the year. That does create high expectations. Can it live up to its reputation? Read our review to find out.

Good Boys - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
A teenage sex comedy, but with three Middle School students as the leads. So it is more of a teenage kissing comedy. It’s still R-rated, so keep that in mind. The extras are not great. There is an audio commentary track and 11 minutes of deleted scenes, but everything else is so short that it is just fluff. That said, it is at least worth a rental, leaning towards a purchase.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus

Monty Python’s Flying Circus: The Complete Series: Norwegian Edition International - Limited Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The complete and uncensored edition of this show coming out in a massive Blu-ray box set. I own this show already, twice, but I can’t help it, I think I’m going to buy it again. I just have to figure out if my PS3 can play 1080i, because apparently that’s what it is encoded at.

The Peanut Butter Falcon - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is one of the best-reviewed films of the year and it is one of the biggest limited release hits of the year. However, it’s only real special feature is a six-minute long making of featurette. It is still worth picking up, but it is not a contender for Pick of the Week.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars: Season Five, Part Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
One of the most popular Anime franchises of all time continues its Blu-ray releases this week. It is worth picking up if you are a fan of Anime, especially if you are a fan of the Magical Girl genre, as this is one of the best and inarguably one of the best-known examples of that genre.

Star Trek: Discovery: Season Two

Star Trek: Discovery: Season Two - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
In my opinion, season one of this show was the best first season of any Star Trek series since The Original Series. Can the second season live up to the first? Does it get better? Check out our review for my opinion.

Steven Universe: The Movie

Steven Universe: The Movie - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The Steven Universe show has one last season coming soon, but this week its movie hits the home market. Is it worth checking out for fans? Or should fans worry that the series is going to end on a sour note?

At the beginning of the movie, Steven is set to take the throne his mother used to hold, but rejects it and heads back to Earth to be with his friends: Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst. Steven thinks the present is perfect and wants nothing to change, but something does change. Spinel shows up looking for revenge on Steven Universe for what Steven’s mother, Pick Diamond, did to her. We don’t find out what happened before she’s able to hit all of the gems with her scythe and covert them back to their gem forms. She can’t poof Steven and he’s able to wrestle her weapon away from her and convert her to her gem form, but now his powers are not working. His father, Greg, tells him not to worry. The Gems will pop back any moment now and they will be back to normal. He’s half right. They do return to their more human forms, but without their memories. This includes Spinel. Now it is up to Steven to get their memories back and figure out why his powers are not working.

Extras include a making of featurette, the act three pitching meeting, and animatics with commentary tracks. That might not seem like a lot at first glance, but the total running time is over two hours. This is longer than the movie itself by just over 50%.

Steven Universe: The Movie is a must have for fans of the series and it would be a solid way to end the series, but it’s not going to be the ending it was made to be and that should keep fans excited.

Yesterday Was a Lie

Yesterday Was a Lie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is one of the first films mentioned on our site. It’s a fantastic Film Noir with a science fantasy mystery to it. The film is very atmospheric with a narrative that touches on a lot of complicated subjects. I pre-ordered the Blu-ray as soon as I saw it was getting a release. Extras include an audio commentary track, making featurettes, and more. It’s absolutely worth picking up and a Pick of the Week contender.

There are also no secondary 4K releases this week.
