Theater Averages: Free Doesn’t Go Solo

October 3, 2018

Free Solo

Free Solo didn’t quite live up to weekend estimates, but it still overtook Eighth Grade for the best theater average of the year with $72,551. It also surpassed An Inconvenient Truth as the documentary with the best theater average of all time. The Old Man and the Gun was in a distant second place with an average of $28,426 in five theaters, while Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. was close behind with an average of $21,787 in two. The only holdover in the $10,000 club was Colette with an average of $10,172 in 38 theaters. It will continue to expand.

There were a number of other new limited releases, some of which did quite well. 306 Hollywood opened with $8,150 in its lone theater. All About Nina did well with an average of $7,654 in four theaters. Monsters and Men opened in 18 theaters earning an average of $6,594. That’s a stronger than expected start for a film opening in that many theaters. The Samuel Project did okay with an average of $5,544 in two theaters. Golden Job opened in 34 theaters and earned an average of $3,570. My Hero Academia: Two Heros is... it’s a mess. It opened on Tuesday and has played in between 456 and 515 theaters since then. It earned an average of $2,669 in 508 theaters over the weekend. However, its average over the six days was a lot more impressive at approximately $7,600. It is also a sign that Anime might be becoming mainstream here. Summer ‘03 struggled, but at least it avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,087 in two theaters.

Two limited releases were not as lucky. Little Women opened with an average of $1,097, but it was playing in 643 theaters. Likewise, Bad Reputation was playing in too many theaters, 196 to be exact, while it only managed an average of $667.

There was only one major milestones reached this week. The Wife got to $5 million before the weekend and $6 million during the weekend.
