Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Weekend predictions: Bob Marley could have the best weekend of 2024 so far

February 16th, 2024

Bob Marley: One Love

Bob Marley: One Love made a huge splash on Wednesday when it had the best mid-week opening day ever for a Valentine’s Day release. Its $14 million debut is also the best single day for a movie at the box office so far this year, comfortably beating Mean Girls$11.5-million opening day. This weekend, it could claim the biggest weekend of the year if it can top $28.6 million between Friday and Sunday. That landmark isn’t guaranteed, but the biopic should end the weekend with over $40 million in the bank, and possibly more than $50 million, from its first five days in theaters. More...

Theater counts: Madame Web weaves its way to widest release

February 15th, 2024

Madame Web

After spending its first two weeks as the widest release and at the box office itself, Argylle slips to second this week, despite an increase in showings as it heads into its third week. The spy-action comedy has racked up just over $31 million in 13-days at the domestic box office, while bringing in roughly the same ($32 million) from overseas play. This week, the espionage feature will take a back seat to Valentine’s Day newcomers Madame Web, and the aptly-named considering the holiday, Bob Marley: One Love. More...

Weekend estimates: Morbius set for disappointing $39.1-million opening

April 3rd, 2022

Morbius

We’re still at the point where new releases are graded on the pandemic curve, but even so Morbius is heading for an opening weekend just on the low side of decent, with Sony projecting this morning that it will make $39.1 million on debut. That’s notably lower than Uncharted’s $44-million opening in February, and breaks a streak of great openings for Sony’s standalone Marvel movies, in particular Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which made $90 million in October last year, when even Disney’s Marvel movies were landing in the $70-million to $80-million range. More...

Theater counts: The Lost City thwarts Morbius’ bid for widest release

March 31st, 2022

Morbius

The Lost City will squeeze into 30 extra theaters this weekend, which will be just enough for it to retain the crown of widest release. Morbius will debut in 4,268 movie houses this weekend, 15 more than The Lost City landed in last weekend, but 15 too few to take the theater-count crown this time around. An overall win at the box office should be ample consolation for the latest film in the Sony Marvel Universe. The two films in ultra-wide release will dominate in theaters this weekend, but a few limited debutants are joining the fray too. More...

2022 market prediction: The Batman’s big opening ushers in a model change and an increase in our forecast for the year

March 16th, 2022

The Batman

When The Batman opened with $134 million over the weekend of March 4 it was cause not just for celebration among movie fans, but also for a reevaluation of our prediction model. Our predictions have held up fairly well throughout the last 18 months, but there’s growing evidence that some films are performing almost as if the pandemic never happened while others are continuing to feel the effects of audience reluctance to return to movie theaters. For this month’s prediction update, I’ve introduced an adjustment for that effect, which boosts the predictions for some tentpole films and increases our overall market prediction to $7.1 billion for the year, up from last month’s predicted $6.6 billion. Theater counts: The defender of Gotham is back with a colossal opening count for The Batman

March 3rd, 2022

The Batman

It’s no surprise, but welcome news nonetheless, that this week’s arrival of The Batman in 4,417 locations puts the film not only as the widest release of the week, but puts it in 13th place among the widest releases of all time, nestled between two animated sequels—Frozen II and Incredibles 2—which debuted in 4,440 and 4,410 theaters respectively. As the only wide release to debut this week, the latest in the Batman franchise also eclipses last year’s No Time to Die (4,407 theaters), and Spider-Man: No Way Home’s 4,336 locations to become the widest release of the (post-)pandemic era. More...

Theater counts: The gap narrows, but Spider-Man preserves its place as widest release

January 20th, 2022

Spider-Man: No Way Home

After topping Spider-Man: No Way Home at the weekend box office, Scream has spent the week trading spots with the webbed superhero, with one outperforming the other one day, only to fall into second place the next. Spider-Man enters its sixth week by showing in 3,705 theaters while Scream gains two locations, bringing this week’s count to 3,666 in its sophomore run. Both films will most likely once again spar to see who takes the top prize at the box office, although two new wide releases will be trying to offer some competition. More...

Holiday theater counts: three wide releases debut today, but Spider-Man remains widest

December 22nd, 2021

Spider-Man: No Way Home

As the Christmas holiday approaches, there are plenty of options for movie-goers. The only question is what to watch? Spider-Man: No Way Home opened last Friday and took nearly everyone by surprise as it posted an opening domestic weekend of $260 million, placing itself between 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War as the second-biggest opening of all time. The film is currently showing in 4,336 locations, which makes it the 30th-widest opening of all time, just behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Spider-Man: No Way Home might not be challenged at the box office, but there are still a wide array of films for every interest. More...

Theater counts: Spider-Man swings into a stellar 4,336 theaters

December 16th, 2021

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters in a big way this weekend, landing in a stellar 4,336 locations. That count places it as the second-widest release of the year, behind No Time to Die’s 4,407 and in front of Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s 4,315. This latest Spider-Man feature again pairs director Jon Watts and Tom Holland (as Spider-Man) from 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home; a film that went on to score over $1 billion worldwide. Spider-Man: No Way Home carries a $200m budget, eclipsing its predecessor by $40m. Also making its theatrical debut this week is Nightmare Alley. The neo-noir psychological thriller directed by Guillermo del Toro is set to release in 2,145 locations. The film, which is based on the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham contains a bevy of top Hollywood actors. More...
