Weekend predictions: will Avatar get an Oscar boost? Can Infinity Pool or Left Behind break through?
January 27th, 2023
The box office performance of Avatar: The Way of Water certainly won’t be harmed this weekend by its 4 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture). How much it will help is the pertinent question for our weekend predictions. It’s the only film from last weekend’s top 10 that looks likely to get a bump from the nominations. One film that wasn’t in the top 10 last weekend could be revived by its Oscar noms: The Fabelmans will add a thousand theaters and try to ride its seven nominations to the best weekend of its run so far. Other Oscar hopefuls expanding this weekend include The Banshees of Inisherin (back in 1,205 theaters), Women Talking (adding 553 locations to play in 707 theaters), Elvis (rereleased in 841 theaters), and Tár, which expands from 106 to 537 movie theaters. Going up against all that are three new releases: Infinity Pool, Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist, and Fear. That’s a lot of competition in the lower reaches of the top 10, but Avatar is in little danger of losing its top spot.

Weekend predictions: Three new entries predicted in top ten, but Thor won’t be challenged at the top
July 15th, 2022
This is another busy week at the box office, with four new movies opening nationwide and two films that each topped $100 million on opening weekend going into their second and third weeks in theaters. There’s not much doubt which film will top the chart (spoiler alert: it’s Thor: Love and Thunder), but our model has been working overtime to compile a predicted top ten.

Weekend predictions: three-way race to top the chart
June 24th, 2022
A remarkable pile-up of films will top the box office chart this weekend, with five of them likely to earn more than $20 million over three days, and three in with a shot at coming out top. If it does happen, this would be the seventh time five films have earned over $20 million in a weekend. Life of Pi holds the record for the high-grossing fifth-placed film with $22.45 million over the weekend of November 23, 2012. That record looks in danger this weekend. But which of Elvis, Jurassic World: Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick does our model think will win the weekend? Read on to find out.
