Featured Digital Review: Sonic the Hedgehog
March 31st, 2020
Talk of a Sonic the Hedgehog movie first began 25 years ago. It’s a super popular video game franchise, or at least it was at its peak. A string of subpar instalments in the franchise hurt its popularity, while the overall terrible quality of the average video game movie made a live-action movie seem like a risk. Then that first trailer came out. Granted, the effects quality improved dramatically as a result of the backlash, but I was still not interested in the substance the trailer offered. Then the reviews showed up and many people said this film was the best video game adaptation of all time. It then went on to become one of the biggest hits of 2020 so far. Is it as good as its reviews / box office numbers? Or do I think this film benefited from low expectations?

2015 Preview: March
March 1st, 2015
February was strong thanks to The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and Fifty Shades of Grey, both of which beat expectations. This March could actually be even better, as there are three or four films that have a decent shot at earning $100 million or more. The top film will likely be Cinderella, which has a real shot at $200 million. Insurgent will almost assuredly get beyond the $100 million mark, while Get Hard, Home, and perhaps Chappie will also get to the century mark. Last March, there were four $100 million hits, led by Divergent, which pulled in $150 million. While this March should be better than February, I'm not sure it will be better than last March. I don't think March 2015 will be much worse than last year, but I think its percentage lead will be chipped away at by the end of the month.

2014 Preview: October
September 30th, 2014
September is over and while it got off to a bad start, a really, really, truly terrible start, it actually ended on a bit of a strong note. Granted, no film has yet to reach $100 million, but The Maze Runner and The Equalizer both could get there in the end. As for October, we might go another month without a $100 million hit. There are a couple of films that have the potential to reach the century mark, Gone Girl and Fury. Hopefully they will get there, but given the recent box office woes, it is probably best to keep expectations low. Last October, there were two films that earned more than $100 million. Bad Grandpa just made it passed that mark. On the other hand, Gravity was a monster hit earning nearly $275 million. It you compare its run to this year's batch of films, it only ranks behind Guardians of the Galaxy. ... There's no way any film opening this month is going to match that. ... There no way the top two films will match that. ... The top three films might not match that. ... 2014 is going to get crushed in the year-over-year comparison and by the end of the month, it will be safe to say its chances of ever catching up to 2013 will be over. It is going to be a depressing month.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Anchorman: The Legend Continues
March 30th, 2014
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy came out in theaters nearly a decade ago. It earned good reviews and did well at the box office managing nearly $90 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. However, it became a classic on the home market and many think it is among Will Ferrell's best movies. Rumors of a sequel persisted for quite a while before Anchorman: The Legend Continues finally came out. It earned better reviews and nearly doubled the first film's numbers at the worldwide box office. Is this because the quality is also better? Or did it unduly benefit from nearly ten years of demand?

Limited Release: Much Ado About Limited Releases
June 7th, 2013
There are not a ton of new releases this week, but there are a few earning good reviews, and even a couple that are earning excellent reviews. Hopefully several will do well enough at the box office to thrive, but the only one I'm really bullish about is Much Ado About Nothing. It has excellent reviews, lots of buzz, and plenty of name recognition on both sides of the camera.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Bachelorette
March 17th, 2013
Before Bachelorette opened in theaters, there were some reports it was going to open wide. In the end, it opened in only a few dozen theaters and struggled to find an audience in limited release. Granted, given its genre, it was always going to struggle in limited release, but is the film worth checking out on the home market? Or is it a misfire that was dumped to limited release, because the studio knew it was a flop?
