True Blood: Season Three was able to lead the way on the Blu-ray sales chart this week, and while the margin was closer than it was on the DVD sales chart, it was still dominant. It started its Blu-ray run with sales of 199,000 units / $7.09 million, which is amazing for a TV on Blu release, although the comparison is difficult, as most TV on DVD releases don't have a Blu-ray release. Likewise, its 20% Blu-ray ratio seems impressive for this type of release; however, there are so few TV on Blu releases that it's hard to judge.

Not much in the way of first run releases this week, but we do have more Awards Season players coming out on the home market. However, if you want the best of the best, you have to look to Sin City - 2-Disc Blu-ray. This week's list was a little too big to fit on one page, so the second part can be found here.

It's the week of the special edition, with roughly 409 such releases on the list (410 if you count the concurrent releases for X-Men: The Last Stand). Of these, most are completely skippable, but a few are actually worth the upgrade. When it comes to digging through the clutter and finding the best of the best there were a few contenders including the blockbusters X-Men: The Last Stand - Collector's Edition, but the likelihood of a bigger special edition coming out sooner than later prevented it from winning. Thank You for Smoking - Buy from Amazon was also highly rated, but in the end I went with Humphrey Bogart - The Signature Collection - Volume 2. Meanwhile, for fellow Canadians, it is your patriotic duty to pick up Corner Gas - Season 3 tomorrow.

Little Man shot up the charts into sixth place with $5.97 million on 1597 screens in 23 markets for a total of $22.63 million internationally. The film had million dollar debuts in both Spain, ($2.06 million on 250 screens), and Mexico, ($1.04 million on 352), while came reasonably close in Russia, ($960,000 on 217 screens, including midweek numbers). In all three markets, the film placed second on the charts. More amazingly is the film's performance in the U.K. as it dipped just 17% to $1.05 million on 315 screens over the weekend and a three-week total of $5.75 million.

For the first time in 10 weeks we have a new winner atop the international box office with Cars finally overtaking Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to win the prize.
The Pixar powerhouse spent its first weekend on top of the international charts with $8.00 million on 3,704 screens in 31 markets for a total of $184.24 million.
Its biggest market was Germany where it topped the charts with $3.05 million on 814 screens; this was more than three times what its nearest competitor earned, but less than a quarter of what Finding Nemo opened with back in 2003.
The film only has two other openings of note, Greece and Turkey, and they both happen this weekend.

Last minute updates in weekend numbers showed that it was
The Da Vinci Code and not
Poseidon grabbing the final spot in the top five. It was an exceedingly close race with the former film topping the latter by less than $3000 both with $5.68 million.
The Da Vinci Code earned its box office on 4352 screens in 57 markets while
Poseidon needed just 3584 in 48. On the other hand, their running tallies are worlds apart with
The Da Vinci Code leading $507.68 million to $94.72 million. That film became just the 12th film to cross $500 million internationally and is less than $20 million from overtaking
Finding Nemo for 10th place on the international charts.

With the World Cup heating up, the vast majority of the world was focuses on the world of sports and movies were a distant second choice for entertainment. No film was able to top $10.0 million internationally over the weekend while number one openings in a handful of markets helped
Poseidon top the charts. Over the weekend the film earned $8.90 million on 3982 screens in 46 markets for a total of $83.16 million. Its best debut came from Russia where it made $1.9 million on 371 screens over the weekend and $2.6 million in total while it took in $997,000 on 291 screens in Brazil. Other number one debuts include $378,000 on 60 screens over the weekend in Belgium, ($445,000 in total), and $255,000 on 134 in Turkey. The film has yet to opened in Germany, among other markets and should have no trouble reaching $100 million internationally, however, that isn't enough by a long shot.

Openings in South Korea and Taiwan helped
X-Men: The Last Stand climb into first place on the international charts with $14.64 million on 6271 screens in 57 markets for an international total of $180.81 million. (Which, like last week's international total, is another palindrome. What are the odds of that?) The film earned $5.9 million on 353 in South Korea and $1.4 million on 166 screens in Taiwan, finishing first in both markets. However, they were not the only results of note this week as the film dipped just 16% to $1.37 million on 459 screens over the weekend for a total of $32.16 million in total. At this point, even if the film didn't have any additional openings left, it would still cross the $200 million mark before its run was over. As it is, it has yet to open in both China and Japan and could earn more internationally than it did stateside.

The world's attention is focused on the World Cup, except for in the United States, which only has three days left till they are eliminated. This caused a huge drop in box office revenue in most markets, but
The Da Vinci Code still led with a strong $22.05 million on 9889 screens in 65 markets for a total of $453.40 million on the international stage. That ranks it 16th internationally while its $640.28 million worldwide puts it ahead of
The Passion of the Christ, among others, and into 27th place on the
All Time Charts. The film is still leading in a few major markets including Germany at $1.29 million on 905 screens over the weekend and $41.69 million in total and Italy at $1.50 million on 645 screens for a total of $32.90 million. However, both those markets are also
football-crazed, which led to drop-offs of 72% and 79% respectively. Its best market over the weekend and overall is Japan where it was down just 25% to $4.45 million on 767 screens for a total of $55.53 million after four weeks of release.

The weekend went more or less according to plan.
Cars won the box office crown with ease, but it just didn't quite earn as much as most had expected.
This didn't hurt the overall box office too much as it reached $154 million, up 13.3% from last weekend and more importantly up 6.8% from the same weekend last year.
This puts the summer box office even with last year while year-to-date 2006 is up by 3%.

The Da Vinci Code completed its three-peat, earning $51.61 million on 11,676 screens in 66 markets for a total of $408.86 million on the international scene.
The film became only the 21st film to top $400 million internationally, and it should become the 12th to reach $500 million before too long.
Worldwide the film has $580.82 million, placing it in 32nd spot on the All Time Charts and should have no trouble reaching $700 million and might even place in the top twenty before its run is over.
As for individual markets, the film is still leading in many major markets including Germany ($6.19 million on 902 screens for a total of $38.79 million), Japan ($6.06 million on 822 screens and $45.95 million in total), Italy ($5.39 million on 747 screens for a $30.68 million total), as well as Spain ($2.69 million on 752 screens for a total of $25.77 million).
The Da Vinci Code could top the charts next week as well, but with the World Cup starting, it will likely see huge declines in most major markets, especially those with teams participating in the two-week football tournament.

Despite the worldwide opening of
X-Men: The Last Stand,
The Da Vinci Code was able to remain on top with a relatively comfortable lead. Over the weekend it added $92.8 million on 12,038 screens in 82 markets for an international total of $320 million while its worldwide total has reached $465.25 million. The film is now 34th on the all-time international charts and 56th on the
worldwide charts. As for individual markets, the results were mixed. In the U.K. is was down a hefty 48% to $9.15 million on 522 screens for a $35.38 million total but it had a better time in Germany down just 17% to $11.16 million on 887 screens for a $29.62 million two-week total. Its best holdover was Holland where it grew by 5% to $2.19 million on 143 screens for a total of $5.06 million, however, that result was aided by holidays and four of the six holdovers in the top ten saw triple-digit growth. Where does it go from here? The film has already made enough to cover its production and P&A budgets, so the only goals left involve climbing the charts. How far up the charts it reaches is still in doubt, but if I ware a betting man, I'd predict that in the end it should reach the top ten internationally and the top twenty worldwide.

During a weekend where records were set at the top of the box office, it was a
documentary that won the race on the Per Theatre Charts.
An Inconvenient Truth set a record for highest per theatre average for a
documentary with more than $280,000 in 4 theatres for an average of $70,333; also, since its debut last Wednesday the film has earned nearly $500,000. Second place when to the aforementioned chart-topping
X-Men: The Last Stand, which earned a very impressive average of $27,846 in 3,690 theatres. The final film to top $10,000 was
Fanaa, which just missed the top ten on the overal charts with $753,067 in 72 theatres for an average of $10,459. This is much better than expected, but as a niche market film, it is unlikely to have strong legs.

Records fell this weekend as X-Men: The Last Stand beat all expectations, so there's little surprise that the overall box office was also much stronger than expected.
For the 3-day weekend it was up 20.3% from last weekend at $197 million, which was 6.9% higher than the same weekend last year.
The total box office for the 4-day weekend was $242 million or 4.2% higher than last year.
Year-to-date, 2006 is ahead of 2005 by a 3% margin, which is in line with ticket price inflation.

Memorial Day long weekend is the busiest weekend of the year. Many times it has been compared to the Superbowl, and for good reason. Over the next four days more than 25 million people will go to see a movie, each of them will be inundated with ads for upcoming releases. Trailers, posters, stands, ads on their popcorn boxes, ads on their drinks, ads, ads, ads.
If the films fail to bring in moviegoers this weekend, the effects will be felt for months.
All this pressure falls on just one wide release and last week's superstar.

On the other hand, this time last year, the Summer Box Office season got off to a really, really bad start so we should at see some strong year-to-year gains, at least for the first two weeks. This should help 2006 extend its lead over 2005 and push ticket sales into the black.
