Theater counts: Super Mario once again widest release as four new features arrive in theaters
April 20th, 2023
Currently enjoying a 15-day domestic haul of over $371 million, The Super Mario Bros. Movie again stands alone as this week’s widest release. Last weekend, the film scored the best second weekend ever for an animated movie. Only dropping 21 cinemas this week, the blockbuster film is still widely available in 4,350 locations. While Mario shouldn’t have any problems leading the box office, like last week, it contends with a flurry of newcomers making their big screen debuts.

Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Bohemian Rhapsody
February 16th, 2019
Bohemian Rhapsody is a monster hit earning more than $200 million domestically and $800 million worldwide. It has also been one of the biggest Awards Season players; in fact, some consider it the favorite to win the Best Picture Oscar. On the other hand, its reviews are barely in the overall positive level. Are the moviegoers and Awards Season voters right and the critics too cynical? Or is there something other than the movie itself that is winning people over?

Limited and VOD Releases: Zookeeper and Others are Having a Wild Time
March 31st, 2017
It’s one of those weeks. There are a number of films earning good reviews, and some are earning great reviews. However, none of them are earning loud enough buzz to suggest they will escape the art house circuit. Worse still, there are many like The Blackcoat’s Daughter that are opening simultaneously on Video on Demand, which will all but kill their box office chances.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Sing Street
July 25th, 2016
Sing Street opened with better buzz than most limited releases earn. It also did relatively well at the box office peaking in 12th place and finishing with just over $3 million. Did this film benefit from the relatively light competition this Spring? Or is it good enough that it should have been released this Fall to compete during Awards Season?

Limited and VOD Releases: See a Limited Releases During Your Coffee Break
July 15th, 2016
It’s not a grand week for limited releases. Café Society is the only big release of the week and while its reviews and its pedigree suggest it should be a hit, it might be the only hit of the week.

Limited and VOD Releases: Singing Praises
April 15th, 2016
There are not a lot of new releases on this week's list, but four of the seven of of them are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Additionally, one of the other three, Fan, doesn't have enough reviews for a Tomatometer Score, but the first two reviews are positive. Of the best films, Sing Street is the one I expect to do the best at the box office.
