Theater counts: Madame Web holds off a flurry of newcomers to remain widest release
February 22nd, 2024
Despite taking a backseat at the box office to Bob Marley: One Love during its opening frame, Madame Web once again finds itself as the widest release in North America this weekend, as it retains (mostly by contractual obligation) its opening count of 4,013 theaters. The superhero film starring Dakota Johnson has earned over $28 million in its first eight days, a figure that has been doubled by One Love, which opened alongside Madame Web on Valentine’s Day. This week witnesses three new wide releases, accompanied by a pandemic era film making its way back into cinemas.

Theater counts: Madame Web weaves its way to widest release
February 15th, 2024
After spending its first two weeks as the widest release and at the box office itself, Argylle slips to second this week, despite an increase in showings as it heads into its third week. The spy-action comedy has racked up just over $31 million in 13-days at the domestic box office, while bringing in roughly the same ($32 million) from overseas play. This week, the espionage feature will take a back seat to Valentine’s Day newcomers Madame Web, and the aptly-named considering the holiday, Bob Marley: One Love.

Monthly preview: October will be a horror show
September 30th, 2020
A month ago, October’s line-up of new releases looked weak, but also suggested the movie industry was planning for a steady recovery. The last few weeks have blown that optimism out the water. Wonder Woman 1984, Death on the Nile, and Candyman have all moved from their planned October release dates, and Black Widow has retreated from the first week of November to May next year. 20th Century Studios (i.e., Disney) threw theaters a tiny bone in the form of The Empty Man, which moved up to October 23, but the message is clear: a recovery in the theatrical business is still a long way away, if it comes at all.

Mulan and I’m Thinking of Ending Things Give People Reasons to Stay Home
September 4th, 2020
This year’s Labor Day weekend in the United States may prove to be historic. While Warner Bros. tests the viability of the theatrical market with a novel release strategy for Tenet, Disney is seeing how far it can get when it eschews theaters altogether with the Premium VOD release of Mulan on Disney+.
While it’s not in the same league as those $200-million behemoths, Charlie Kaufman’s psychological horror movie I’m Thinking of Ending Things provides some counter-programming, and is significant in its own right as part of another trend in the industry: major art-house film-makers finding a home in the home market.

VOD Releases: Horror Films are Out for Blood
September 3rd, 2020
It’s a busy week on VOD, especially if you are a fan of horror. Blood Quantum, Followed, and Z are all worth checking out. There are also some smaller horror releases or ones with weaker reviews that might be worth it for more hardcore fans. If you are not a fan of horror, then The Wind Rises is your best bet.

Limited and VOD Releases: Missing these Limited Releases is Unforgivable
October 19th, 2018
It’s an excellent week for limited releases with a trio of amazing films that have great star power as well. Can You Ever Forgive Me?, What They Had, and Wildlife all have a shot at box office success. Not to mention several documentaries, like On Her Shoulders, Sharkwater Extinction, Transformer, that could do well in limited release.

Limited Release: Foxy Releases
November 14th, 2014
It's a long list this week, but you could eliminate nearly all of the films and concentrate on just Foxcatcher and Rosewater. These two films are earning the vast majority of the buzz. They are not the only films worth seeing, Red Army looks particularly good, but I worry no other film will thrive.
