Theater counts: number one Spider-Man weaves its way into 4,332 theaters, Transformers opens in 3,678 locations
June 8th, 2023
After debuting as the second-widest release last week, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse adds 19 locations this week, becoming available in 4,332 theaters. The web-slinging superhero and friends earned a hefty $120 million in its opening weekend, and currently holds a six-day domestic total of over $159 million. While those are solid numbers, Spider-Man will have its hands full trying to fend off the release of this week’s newcomer, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Limited and VOD Releases: Oscar Bounce Dissuades New Releases
January 15th, 2016
It is one of the worst weekends to release a film in limited release, because the Oscars nominations were just announced and people who are most interested in limited releases are more likely to check out any Oscar nominated film they might have previously missed. There are only a few films with more than a handful of reviews, and only one of those is earning overwhelmingly positive reviews: The Lady in the Van.

Featured DVD Review: Before I Disappear
May 17th, 2015
Before I Disappear opened in limited release and Video on Demand last November, which is the heart of Awards Season. Despite earning a number of awards in various Film Festivals, its reviews were not Award-worthy and the competition led to its quick disappearance at the box office. Now that it is on the home market, is it worth checking out? Or would the film have struggled no matter when it was released?

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: The Book of Life
January 31st, 2015
The Book of Life opened in October and as a family film with a bit of a Halloween flavor to it, I thought it would be a success at the box office. The reviews were certainly great, but it failed to find an audience in theaters. Will it perform better on the home market? Or was there a reason it failed to find an audience in theaters?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Adventure Time: Season Four
October 5th, 2014
This is going to be a shorter review than normal, the third shorter review in a row. The reason for this is simple. I've previously reviewed the Jake the Dad DVD and many of the shorts on that DVD are included on this Blu-ray. There's no need to repeat myself here, so instead I will concentrate on the few episodes that are new to me and that were highlights or lowlights. Is this Blu-ray better than the mixed DVD release in terms of quality? Is it worth picking even if you already own many of these shorts?

Featured TV on DVD Review: Beauty and the Beast: Season One
October 4th, 2013
Beauty and the Beast is a remake of the 1987 series of the same name. That show starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman and while it only lasted two seasons (the third season with Linda Hamilton hardly counts) it developed a very loyal fan base. This remake was not greeted with a lot of critical praise, while its ratings dropped from 2.78 million for the series premiere to just 1.26 million for the season finale. Were the critics right? Were viewers wise to abandon the show?

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for July 30th, 2013
July 29th, 2013
It's a good thing I didn't get Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Four on Blu-ray reviewed last week. I was tempted, because there were so few new releases worth considering for Pick of the Week; however, there are even fewer contenders for Pick of the Week this week. Both Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Four and Redemption are worth picking up, but the former is better value and it is the Pick of the Week. The only other real contender is Cloudburst on DVD, which is the winner of this week's Puck of the Week, for best new Canadian release. Samurai Pizza Cats: The Complete Series is also worth picking up, but I would wait till the price drops.
