After debuting as the second-widest release last week, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse adds 19 locations this week, becoming available in 4,332 theaters. The web-slinging superhero and friends earned a hefty $120 million in its opening weekend, and currently holds a six-day domestic total of over $159 million. While those are solid numbers, Spider-Man will have its hands full trying to fend off the release of this week’s newcomer, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
The past few weeks have been a pleasure for fans of big budget franchise films and this week is no exception as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts charges into North American theaters. Directed by Steven Caple Jr., the science fiction feature introduces fans to a whole new breed of Transformer—the Maximals—to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons. Starring Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback, and voices from Pete Davidson and Ron Perlman, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be available in 3,678 movie houses.
Rounding out the top five widest releases this week is The Little Mermaid, which retains its count of 4,320 cinemas from its first two weeks. Alongside Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the other newcomer from last week is the horror feature, The Boogeyman, maintaining its opening theater count of 3,205, and lastly, $784 million worldwide earner Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 3,175 venues.
There are plenty of options for moviegoers in the limited release category this week as well. Blue Fox Entertainment is releasing their post-war drama, Mending the Line in 403 locations. The film portrays a wounded veteran who, still carrying the demons of war, returns to the States and is challenged with finding something to live for. Releasing in 56 theaters is the sci-fi horror, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster. The film stars Laya DeLeon Hayes as a 17 year-old genius, who after losing her brother to violence, resurrects him, but not all goes as planned. Other movies opening in limited locations this week are Americonned in two theaters, and German thriller, Time of Moulting in one location.
Looking ahead to next week we see three wide releases making their big screen debuts. The widest of these will be The Flash which is expected to arrive in approximately 4,100 theaters. Next up is Disney-Pixar’s, Elemental. The animated feature will start out in about 3,900 locations. Lastly, is the horror movie The Blackening, which is projected to release in 1,800 cinemas.
