Theater counts: Argylle hits 3,605 theaters this weekend
February 1, 2024
After three weeks of being the widest release in the land, Mean Girls slips into the third-place slot this week as a newcomer makes its way into theaters. The teen musical comedy has racked up just short of $62 million in its first 20-days at the box office, and has been running neck-and-neck with Jason Statham’s action flick, The Beekeeper in recent days, winning the weekend box office, but slipping to second on the daily charts during the week. This week will witness a new leader at the box office as Argylle makes its debut.
Argylle follows a reclusive author of best-selling espionage novel. When the plots of her books begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Starting its run in 3,605 venues, the spy film is directed by Matthew Vaughn, and includes an impressive lead ensemble cast, headlined by the title character, played by Henry Cavill. Vaughn has previously directed 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service as well as its sequel, 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
Also opening in wide release this week is the comedy film, Scrambled. Making its debut in 762 movie houses, the film follows a 34-year old woman who after a breakup decides to freeze her eggs, setting her on an empowering journey to a brave new world where she ultimately discovers “the one” she’s looking for might be herself. The film stars Leah McKendrick who also helms the feature.
Opening on February 1 is the latest from The Chosen series as Fathom Events released Episodes 1-3 of Season 4 on the big screen. The studio is set to release episodes 4-6 on February 15, and finally episodes 7 and 8 on February 29th.
Rounding out the top five this week is the aforementioned The Beekeeper, and Mean Girls, still playing in a wide 3,277 and 3,107 cinemas respectively. Occupying the fourth-place position this week is Wonka, available in 2,901 theaters. That film is edging closer to the $200 million mark domestically, currently sitting at just above $196 million. Lastly, Migration finds its way into the top five, playing this week in 2,825 locations.
Looking ahead to next week we see two wide releases make their theatrical debuts. Expected to arrive in approximately 3,000 theaters is the 1980s horror-comedy, Lisa Frankenstein, starring Kathryn Newton. Also opening next week is the 2022 animated feature, Turning Red, a movie, like Soul from two weeks ago, that was canceled in favor of a Disney+ exclusive release and is now being brought to North American cinemas.
