July 28, 2022
An animated feature is back as the widest release as this week sees the arrival of DC League of Super Pets. Debuting in 4,314 locations, the latest from Warner Bros. features an all-star voice cast, headlined by the renowned comedic duo of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. The film follows Krypto (voiced by Johnson), who after his owner, Superman, is kidnapped must convince a rag-tag shelter pack—Ace the hound, PB the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle and Chip the squirrel—to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the superheroes. DC League of Super-Pets will also be available to stream on HBO Max 45 days after its theatrical release.
Also new in wide release this week is the B.J. Novak-written and directed Vengeance. Playing in 998 theaters, the comic thriller follows a journalist and podcaster who travels from New York City to West Texas to investigate the death of a girl he was hooking up with.
Making its sophomore appearance this week is current box office topper Nope. The latest Jordan Peele movie earned over $44 million in its opening weekend and currently sits with a six-day domestic total of $58.5 million. Nope will add 22 locations this week, going from 3,785 to 3,807 cinemas. Rounding out the latest top five for the upcoming week is last week’s widest release Thor: Love and Thunder, showing in 3,650 theaters. Just behind Thor in 3,579 locations comes Minions: The Rise of Gru and lastly, Where the Crawdads Sing playing in 3,526 movie houses.
Options for new limited releases are once again plenty this week. Releasing in 97 theaters, the psychological thriller Resurrection starring Rebecca Hall follows a woman who attempts to protect herself and her daughter from an abusive ex-boyfriend who suddenly reappears in her life after twenty-two years. Also debuting this week in four New York and Los Angeles area locations, prior to a larger rollout, is A Love Song. The romantic drama stars Dale Dickey and Wes Studi as Faye and Lito, two widowed friends who spend the night together by a Colorado mountain lake. Lastly, the Brazilian thriller Medusa is set to release in three locations.
Looking ahead to next week we see the release of Brad Pitt headliner, Bullet Train, and the comedy Easter Sunday, starring funny man Jo Koy. The former is expected to bow in over 4,000 theaters while the latter to release in about 3,200 locations.
