Theater counts: Dune holds as a new batch of releases debut

Dune arrived in North American theaters last weekend and took in a solid $41.01 million in its first three days from 4,125 theaters. The film is expected to retain that count heading into its second week. Fans of the sci-fi epic will be pleased as a sequel was announced earlier this week. Dune: Part 2 is set to launch on October 20, 2023. Rounding out the top five widest releases this week are the returning films Halloween Kills (3,616 locations), Ron’s Gone Wrong, (3,560), No Time to Die (3,507), and Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 3,278 theaters. But no less than five new wide releases and one wide re-release are also landing in theaters this weekend.
The widest film to open this week is the Edgar Wright directed psychological thriller, Last Night in Soho. The film, set in 1960s London opens in 3,016 theaters. Next up is the latest from Searchlight Pictures in Antlers, which is set to release in 2,800 locations. Also hitting cinemas this week is A Mouthful of Air. The drama starring Amanda Seyfried and Finn Wittrock arrives in 816 locations. Funimation will release the Japanese superhero film, My Heroes Academia: World Heroes Mission in an estimated 1,600 locations. Debuting last week and earning a six-day total of $1.76M from 52 locations, The French Dispatch expands into 788 movie houses this week. Lastly, Sony Pictures will re-release the beloved supernatural comedy Ghostbusters in 774 theaters.
New in limited release this week is the drama, The Match. The film, inspired by true events from the spring of 1944 when the Nazis organized a football match between a team of camp inmates and an elite Nazi team on Adolf Hitler’s birthday, opens in eight locations.
Looking ahead to next week is the arrival of the long-awaited and highly anticipated Eternals. The Walt Disney film, directed by Chloé Zhao and carrying a $200-million budget, is estimated to launch in 4,000 locations…
