Theater counts: Mortal Kombat takes on Demon Slayer in this week’s showdown
April 22, 2021
After experiencing a week with no new wide releases, this week will be a ray of sunshine for movie-goers as we see three new wide releases open across North America. The widest of these is the highly-anticipated Mortal Kombat. The Warner Bros. film arrives on 3,073 theaters, including IMAX locations, as well as HBO Max. Also new this week is the worldwide blockbuster anime film, Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train, which has already made over $435m worldwide. Early reports have the Japanese fantasy film outselling Mortal Kombat 4 to 1 at AMC locations. That said, the FUNimation movie is only expected in around 1,500 locations, which will place Mortal Kombat as the widest release of the week. Demon Slayer will also show on IMAX screens and previews start on Thursday evening. One other wide release is debuting this week: Bleecker Street’s Together Together. The comedy starring Ed Helms and Patti Harrison, opens in 665 theaters.
Looking ahead to next week, Separation opens wide and Limbo opens in 200 locations.
Here are this weekend’s theater counts (Warner Bros. and Funimation titles’ counts are estimates):
