Weekend estimates: Marksman stays top

The Marksman will remain at the top of the box office chart this weekend with a decent 35% decline from its opening according to Open Road’s Sunday morning projection. The Croods: A New Age will fall just 9% from last weekend to finish second. Wonder Woman 1984 (which our model forecast would regain top spot) is set to fall 38% this weekend to $1.6 million for a total of $37.7 million to date.
Overall, our model nailed the projected total for all films in the top six, but that’s mainly because its low-side predictions for The Marksman and The Croods were canceled out by an overly optimistic prediction for Wonder Woman. The market as a whole continues to dwindle thanks to the lack of new releases and the continued effects of the pandemic. There are signs that COVID-19 cases are coming down in the United States, but they remain sufficiently high that recovery at the box office is still some way away. The one good piece of news is that Warner Bros. is going ahead with their release of The Little Things next weekend, with a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max. That should help boost the overall market.
With the The Croods having overtaken Wonder Woman on the weekend chart, and ahead $41.8 million to $37.7 million in total domestic box office, it’s clear that the animated film will come out the winner in the domestic theatrical market. The international race between the two films looks likely to turn out slightly differently, although the films are again neck and neck.
Wonder Woman 1984 will add another $2.1 million internationally this weekend for a total of $110.3 million outside North America so far, and $148.0 million worldwide. It will bag another $625,000 in Australia this weekend for a total of $17.3 million there so far.
The Croods: A New Age will pick up $1.6 million internationally this weekend for a total of $97.962 million overseas. Its global total is now $139.797 million, with its two top markets Australia, with $851,00 this weekend for a total of $13.857 million; and New Zealand with $178,000 for $2.261 million in total.
