DVD and Blu-ray Releases: Bad Boys and The Gentlemen New on Disc

April 21, 2020

Looking for Alaska

It’s a tough week for new releases on physical disc, although not because of the quality of the new releases. In fact, there are several new releases that I’m interested in. However, Amazon is having issues that’s making it hard to research this column. The biggest release on this week’s list is Bad Boys For Life, but I’m still waiting for the screener for that movie. Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is also a welcome new major release.

The review DVD for Looking for Alaska did arrive, but not until Monday, so the review will have to wait. That said, it has some of the best reviews on this week’s list, and solid extras, which is enough to be the only real contender for Pick of the Week.

Bad Boys For Life - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The biggest domestic hit of the year, although under normal circumstances, it wouldn’t have lasted as the biggest hit this late into the year. The film’s reviews are really good for a wide-release action film and I’m looking forward to seeing it. Unfortunately, the screener hasn’t arrived yet, so I can’t tell you if I like the film as much as the average critic. Nor can I tell you if the extras are really good, or just quantity over quality. Also coming out this week is the franchise Blu-ray box set. It has been a long time since the previous installments came out, so I wouldn’t be too surprised if a lot of fans don’t have those films on Blu-ray.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Set 5 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This series is nowhere near as good as the original Naruto, although it is still selling rather well, so clearly it has fans. Maybe it will last long enough to match its potential.

IP Man: The Finale - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
A potential Pick of the Week contender this week. The movie itself is excellent and fans of the franchise, or of martial arts movies in general, will want to pick it up. However, the only extras are a trio of really short featurettes, and the combined running time is just seven minutes, so it misses the mark for Pick of the Week.

The Last Full Measure - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Busted Oscar-bait. The film isn’t bad, but it is far from great either. Its extras are better than expected for a film that bombed at the box office, but it is still only worth a rental, unless you are a major fan of the cast and / or genre.

Like a Boss - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This film bombed both in theaters and with critics. Even if you like the cast, you have better options out there.

The Gentlemen - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A return to form for Guy Ritchie. It is not among his best, but it is still a great watch for fans of British gangster movies. The extras are disappointing for a film that did over $100 million worldwide, but enough to be worth picking up.

The screener for this TV show arrived on Monday afternoon. I will get to the review this weekend. That said, even though I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, it is the only real contender for Pick of the Week.

The Turning - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
One of several low-budget horror movies that came out this year. Nearly all of them failed to impress critics and all but one bombed in theaters. This wasn’t the exception. It’s garbage. Skip it. On a side note, the link to VOD on the Amazon page goes to the wrong movie.

To Catch a Thief: Paramount Presents - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This would be the Pick of the Week, if it were a fully-loaded special edition Blu-ray. However, the film has been released on better Blu-rays in the past, one of which I reviewed. There are two other Paramount Presents releases coming out this week: Fatal Attraction (Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray) and King Creole (Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray)
