International Box Office: Sonic Speeds its Way to $100 million Globally

February 20, 2020

Sonic The Hedgehog

Sonic The Hedgehog opened with $43 million in 40 markets for an early worldwide total of just over $101 million. This is a fantastic start for a film that cost $90 million to make and there’s already talk of not just a sequel, but a Sonic Cinematic Universe. The film’s biggest individual market was Mexico, where it opened with $6.82 million, while the U.K. was right behind with $6.17 million on 619 screens.

Birds of Prey slipped to second place with $23.0 million on 14,651 screens in 78 markets for totals of $83.6 million internationally and $143.1 million worldwide. The film is going to match its production budget domestically and has already topped that figure internationally, so it isn’t going to bomb, but it is also isn’t going to be a massive money maker either. It might only make money synergistically. In other words, it might need periodic sales boosts due to releases of other D.C.E.U. films to eventually break even. That’s how the first Thor movie broke even; although that film did so in a much faster time frame than Birds of Prey will do, if it can break even. This is also the main reason why studios are so eager to create their own cinematic universes.

Bad Boys for Life remained in third plae with $11.73 million on 6,332 screens in 81 markets for totals of $187.86 million internationally and $369.41 million worldwide. The film is coasting on holdovers, but it did earn more than $1 million in both France ($1.27 million on 512 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.71 million after four weeks of release) and in the U.K. ($1.10 million on 435 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.76 million after a month of release). The film will soon top $200 million internationally and $400 million worldwide, which is more than enough to justify a sequel and potentially a spin-off.

1917 remained in fourth place with $14.1 million 53 markets for totals of $179.9 million internationally and $325.7 million worldwide. The film opened in Japan with $2.31 million in 317 screens, giving it second place in the process. The film has yet to open in South Korea and it should cross $200 million internationally very soon.

Fantasy Island managed a spot in the top five with $7.71 million on 3,945 screens in 49 markets. Its biggest market was France with $1.31 million on 233 screens, but that was only enough for eighth place there. On the other hand, the film topped the chart in Indonesia with $1.02 million on 561 screens.

Parasite didn’t reach the top five, but it cross $200 million worldwide with $12.79 million in 43 markets over the weekend for totals of $161.07 million internationally and $204.26 million worldwide.
