International Box Office: Bad Boys Bounces Star Wars Out of Top Spot

January 22, 2020

Bad Boys for Life

Bad Boys for Life took over top spot with $37.50 million on 8,945 screens in 54 international markets over the three-day weekend and $38.96 million including previews and non-standard days, as Sony puts it. The film’s biggest market was arguably Germany where it earned $4.71 million on 661 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $5.14 million. However, the film made more money over the three-day weekend in the U.K., $4.93 million in 535 theaters, to be more precise. The film earned strong openings in Australia with $3.97 million on 259 and in Mexico with $3.88 million on 2,242 screens.

1917 remained in second place with $26.4 million in 26 markets for a total of $63.1 million internationally. This includes a very strong opening in France, where it earned first place with $4.13 million in 575 theaters. However, it was the U.K. that stole the show, as the film was down just 17% to $8.07 million over the weekend for a total of $24.03 million after ten days of release.

Dolittle climbed to third place with $17.3 million in 46 markets for a still early international total of $29.0 million. The film did okay in Australia with $2.33 million on 294 screens, which was enough for third place there. On the other hand, it opened in first place in Indonesia with $2.13 million on 364 screens. Furthermore, the film has yet to open in most major markets, so it could still do well internationally, I just can’t see it doing well enough to cover its $175 million production budget.

Jumanji: The Next Level fell to fourth place with $17.00 million on 9,655 screens in 84 markets for totals of $438.51 million internationally and $709.13 million worldwide. This includes a first place, $4.18 million debut on 1,333 screens in Brazil. This is the last market the movie has to open in, so it won’t last long enough to get to $500 million internationally, but it should still reach $750 million worldwide.

Frozen II rounded out the top five with $12.0 million in 53 markets for totals of $936.2 million internationally and $1.401 billion worldwide. The film has earned more than $100 million in both China ($121.9 million) and in Japan ($114.4 million) and will come very close to that mark in South Korea ($98.36 million). On the other hand, the film is coasting on holdovers, so once it overtakes Age of Ultron for 10th place on the all-time worldwide chart, its run will be effectively over.
