Limited and VOD Releases: Armageddon for Limited Releases

January 10, 2020

Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon

This time of year is terrible for limited releases and while I don’t think any of the films on this week’s list will find an audience in theaters, there are a few that are worth checking out. This includes Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, which is playing on Netflix and it is worth watching.

Chhapaak - Reviews
This Indian film is about the real-life acid attack from 2005. The reviews are good. Just as importantly, there are reviews, as most Indian films that open here have none. Furthermore, it is the widest limited release of the week and it could do well, compared to other Indian films.

Earth - Reviews
A documentary about earth. ... That’s lower case earth, as in dirt and rock. It looks at how humans move earth through mining, construction, etc. The documentary does have some elements of “Big machines are cool!”, but it also talks about the environment impact.

Inherit the Viper - Reviews
Video on Demand
The film focuses on a family involved in the drug trade and what happens when one of them tries to leave the family business. The reviews are mixed and it is playing on VOD, so its box office chances are close to zero. That said, it isn’t so bad that giving it a rental isn’t such a bad idea.

Les Misérables - Reviews
This film could be an Oscar nominee for Best International Film, as it made the shortlist this year. It is also a French film, which should help its box office chances, as films from that country have a built in audience on the art house circuit. On the other hand, it is a massive long shot to actually win the Oscar.

Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon - Reviews
This franchise is amazing in terms of quality, but there just isn’t a large enough target audience to warrant a wide release. It should do well on Netflix and kids of the right age could watch it on repeat.

Three Christs - Reviews
Video on Demand
A true-life story about an early breakthrough in treating schizophrenia. The film has a great cast and a great premise, but the end result in thoroughly mediocre. Maybe if you like the cast it is still worth a VOD rental.

Secondary VOD Releases:
The Assent - No Reviews - Video on Demand
The Corrupted - Reviews - Video on Demand
The Dawn - No Reviews - Video on Demand
The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson - Reviews - Video on Demand
Reality Queen! - Reviews - Video on Demand
There are five secondary VOD titles this week with a combined zero positive reviews. That’s impressive, in a morbid way.
