Theater Averages: Uncut Won’t Be an Undiscovered Gem

December 19, 2019

Uncut Gems

Uncut Gems led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $107,448 in five theaters. The only film to earn a better average this year was Parasite; however, while that film earned an average of $131,072 during its opening weekend, it was playing in only three theaters, so Uncut Gems arguably has the better opening. Bombshell also had an explosive opening with an average of $79,789 in four theaters. The number one film of the weekend, Jumanji: The Next Level, was next with an average of $14,017. The final film in the $10,000 club was A Hidden Life with an average of $10,077 in five theaters.

There were almost no other new limited releases to talk about and none of them did well. Cunningham only managed an average of $4,606 in four theaters. However, that’s more than double what Spiral Farm opened with, as that film missed the Mendoza Line with an average of just $1,825 in three theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • No Safe Spaces got a boost last weekend and that helped it hit $1 million this weekend. It won’t go any further.
  • On the other hand, Fantastic Fungi has been incredibly stable and that helped it reach $1 million after 13 weeks of release. This stability could help it reach $2 million, eventually.
  • Promare hit $2 million, mostly through limited special engagements, which makes getting to this milestone even more impressive.
  • Dark Waters’ wide expansion didn’t go as well as hoped, but it still managed $6 million before the weekend and $7.5 million during the weekend. It could still get to $10 million.
  • Parasite got all the way to $20 million, but unless it wins a lot of major awards, that’s as far as it will go.
