Home Market Releases for December 10th, 2019

Hustlers

As Christmas rapidly approaches, the number of home market releases shrinks. That said, we do have three $100 million hits on this week’s list, Hustlers, It: Chapter Two, and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. All three are worth picking up, but Hustlers and Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice are Pick of the Week contenders, with the former winning out.

Hustlers

Hustlers - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I put in a request for a screener for this film, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I hope it gets here soon, as it earned excellent reviews and even early Awards Season success. There doesn’t appear to be many extras, but it is still worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

It: Chapter Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film isn’t as nearly as good as the first part was, but it is still good enough to be worth checking out. The two-disc set has an audio commentary on the first disc and 100 minutes of featurettes on the second. I’m not sure it needed a second disc for the extras, but it is enough to be worth picking up.

Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice

Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is one of the biggest documentary hits of the year and has the reviews to back that up. Like most documentaries, it doesn’t have a lot of extras, but it does have some additional interviews and that’s enough to be a Pick of the Week contender.

Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Collector’s Edition
Video on Demand
This film could be one of big winners on Oscar night. It certainly did well with Golden Globe Nominations. There are not a ton of extras on the regular edition, while the Collector’s Edition is overpriced. It is still worth picking up, but not a Pick of the Week contender.

The Orville: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Season two is a tough season to look at when it comes to its Tomatometer Score. Usually there is a huge increase in the score, but also a massive drop in the number of reviews, so it is nearly impossible to tell if the show actually got better, or if it was just so bad that the vast majority of critics didn’t even bother reviewing season two. This is the situation we are in with The Orville. However, I’ve seen every episode of this show and in my opinion, the first season’s reviews were too harsh, while the second season’s Tomatometer Score is overstating things. Its average review score is 7.6 out of 10 and I think that’s right on the money. The lack of extras prevents it from being a Pick of the Week contender, but it is close.

The Peanut Butter Solution - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I’ve seen this film countless times, but I haven’t seen it since I was a kid and I remember almost nothing about it. It’s about a kid who is frightened so badly all of his hair falls out, but uses a concoction based on peanut butter to grow more hair. Too much hair. I don’t remember the movie, but many reviews call it super creepy, and those are the positive ones. I’m intrigued and I might have to buy it to find out how creepy it actually is.

Twin Peaks: From Z to A - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This was made to give as a gift. It is too pricey for the average fan, especially since this is now a quadruple-dip, but it would be really fun to open on Christmas day.
