July 31, 2019

The Lion King

The Lion King remained in first place on the overall chart and the theater average chart. It managed an average of $16,216 on the latter, putting it ahead of Honeyland, which landed in second place with an average of $15,000 in two theaters. The Farewell remained in the $10,000 club with an average of $11,246 in 135 theaters. Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood was the final film in the $10,000 club with an average of $11,228.

There were not that many other new limited release to talk about, but a couple of them did rather well. The Mountain earned an average of $8,464 in two theaters, while Mike Wallace is Here earned an average of $6,479 in three. On the other hand, For Sama struggled with an average of $3,117 in three theaters. The Fighting Preacher barely avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,151 in 28 theaters. Meanwhile, In Safe Hands wasn’t as lucky with an opening of $1,737 in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Maiden reached $1 million over the weekend and it has a real shot at $2 million.
  • The Art of Self-Defense made it to $2 million, but that is as far as it will go.
  • Super 30 also hit $2 million, but it too likely won’t get any further.
  • The Farewell hit $3 million. Its theater average is still over $10,000, so it will clearly continue to expand hitting more milestones along the way.
  • The Last Black Man in San Francisco topped $4 million during the weekend. It has a shot at $5 million, but it is far from a sure thing.
  • Likewise, Pavarotti also made it to $4 million, getting there before the weekend. It has a slightly better shot at reaching $5 million before its box office run is done.
