Spider-Man: Far from Home

Spider-Man: Far from Home expanded nearly worldwide over the weekend, and earned $236.74 million on 53,120 screens in 85 markets for a still early international total of $393.37 million, and $578.43 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was South Korea, where it earned $24.55 million on 2,173 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $33.45 million. Far From Home also cracked $10 million in the U.K. with $10.53 million on 979 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $17.77 million and in Mexico with $10.39 million on 3,806 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $13.42 million. The film earned a total opening of $12.11 million in Australia, including $7.26 million on 332 screens over the weekend. The film’s biggest holdover was China, where it earned $29.88 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $166.63 million. Italy was the only market the film wasn’t playing in over the weekend, but that changed on Wednesday and we will have those numbers next week.

White Storm 2: The Drug Lords opened in first place in China and second place overall with $60.64 million over the weekend for a total opening of $62.79 million.

Toy Story 4 slipped to third with $43.1 million in 45 markets for totals of $343.4 million internationally and $650.0 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but rose to $60.1 million in Mexico, making it the highest grossing animated film in that market. The film has yet to open in Japan and Germany, so it isn’t quite done yet.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 rose to fourth place with $23.5 million in 55 markets for totals of $122.8 million internationally and $263.5 million worldwide. China was the only new market where the film earned more than $10 million, pulling into third place with $10.40 million. Its box office grew in Germany to $2.91 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $6.23 million, so that’s reason to celebrate.

Annabelle Comes Home fell to fifth place with $20 million on 10,472 screens in 69 markets for totals of $84.3 million internationally and $134.2 million worldwide. The film debuted in first place in Italy with $1.7 million on 420 screens. It wasn’t as lucky in Germany with $1.4 million on 395.

Aladdin was knocked out of the top five, but it is still doing well enough that we should track it, just in case it reaches $1 billion worldwide. This weekend, the film earned $16.2 million in 55 markets over the weekend for totals of $600.9 million internationally and $921.7 million worldwide. The film’s legs have been amazing up to this point, so $1 billion isn’t out of the question. It isn’t a sure thing either, but we will keep an eye on it in the meantime.

Avengers: Endgame earned $1.3 million in 40 markets for totals of $1.925 billion internationally and $2.773 billion worldwide. At the end of the weekend, the film was less than $4 million behind Avatar for first place on the all-time worldwide chart and since it made more than that worldwide over the weekend, it seems very likely that it will be the number one film by this time next week.
