Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu won what was perhaps the closest race on the international chart in my time on the job. The film won first place with $103.0 million on 36,633 screens in 62 markets for totals of $112.4 million internationally and $166.9 million worldwide. The film dominated the chart in China earning first place with $40.61 million on an estimated 20,000 screens. It also earned first place in the U.K. with $6.46 million in 579 theaters. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Germany ($5.0 million on 1,220 screens); France ($4.8 million in 467 theaters); Mexico ($4.36 million on 2,686 screens); and Australia ($3.5 million on 412 screens). The film only managed fourth place in South Korea with $1.71 million on 817 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.20 million. The film debuts in Russia this weekend and while this isn’t the last market, it is the last major market.

Avengers: Endgame was right behind with $102.3 million 55 markets for totals of $1.76 billion internationally and $2.49 billion worldwide. The film crossed a couple of major milestones in individual markets topping $600 million in China ($610.1 million) and $100 million in the U.K. ($104.9 million). It is about to cross the century mark in South Korea with a running tally of $96.6 million, while it set the industry record in Brazil with $72.5 million.

The Hustle opened in third place with $13.8 million in 36 markets. It had a surprisingly strong start in Russia earning $2.50 million in 1,021 theaters. It also did well in Germany ($1.86 million in 467 theaters over the weekend for a total opening of $2.08 million) and in Australia ($1.52 million on 261 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.84 million). On the other hand, the film struggled in the U.K. with $1.35 on 446 screens and in Spain where it only managed $642,000 in 247.

Capernaum continued to do well in China earning $8.57 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $41.43 million in that market. Add in earlier international markets and the movie has made $54.7 million internationally and $56.3 million worldwide. This is amazing for a film from Lebanon, which is not a market that tends to have a lot of international hits.

Mom opened in China earning fourth place with $5.72 million over the weekend for a total opening of $5.94 million. The film has previously played in its native India and other markets and worldwide it now has $13.4 million.
