2018 - Awards Season: PGA - Nominations

January 4, 2019

Black Panther

The Producers Guild of America announced their nominations in the theatrical categories today and there are some trends building. However, there are also some questions generated after these nominations were announced.

The categories and nominees are...

Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures

Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures

Notes and Reactions...

  • We are starting to some real trends with Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians, and A Star is Born all earning three top line nominations so far this year. I would assume all of them are practically guaranteed Best Picture Oscar nods as well.
  • Some would argue that If Beale Street Could Talk was snubbed, but unfortunately, this is no longer being snubbed and is part of a trend. Hopefully I’m wrong, but I just think Awards Season voters are not interested in the movie.
  • Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch got a Best Animated Feature nomination over Mirai. How?
  • It is too early to tell which way the Best Documentary category is going, but I think a lot of the films on this list will also get nominations in other Awards Season ceremonies.
  • Two of the Best Documentary nominations are about mountain climbing. This isn’t an important point; I just find it odd.
