International Box Office: The Meg Swims the Seven Seas

August 16, 2018

The Meg

The Meg led the way on the international chart cracking the century mark with $101.5 million on 30,212 screens in 42 markets and a worldwide opening of $146.9 million. This is great news, and the film cost Warner Bros. $130 million to make, after tax rebates and the like, so the film needed a monster opening to break even any time soon. The film’s biggest market was China, where it earned $49.83 million on 16,307 screens. It only managed third in that market, but it was a very busy weekend with two massive local hits also debuting this weekend. The film was able to top the charts in Mexico with $6.30 million on 1,936 screens and in Russia with $5.48 million on 2,628. It wasn’t as potent in the U.K., but it still topped the chart with $4.66 million in 499 theaters. The film has yet to open in South Korea, Australia, France, and Japan, so it should stick around the top five for a bit.

The Island debuted in first place in China and second place internationally with $77.46 million over the weekend for a total opening of $77.53 million.

iPartment was right behind with $71.16 million, all of which was earned in China.

Mission: Impossible—Fallout fell to fourth place with $38.4 million in 59 markets for totals of $275.6 million internationally and $436.9 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings, which explains why it fell nearly 50%. The film is about to overtake the first Mission: Impossible for fourth place in the franchise.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again rounded out in the top five with $22.2 million in 58 markets for totals of $178.0 million internationally and $281.9 million worldwide. The film’s only major market opening was South Korea, where it made $4.09 million in 724 theaters over the weekend for a total opening of $6.58 million. It continues to do amazing in the U.K. This past weekend, the film earned $4.56 million in 698 theaters for a total of $61.69 million so far. That’s more than $300 million here, if you take into account the size of the two markets.

Incredibles 2 fell out of the top five with $14.6 million in 34 markets for totals of $498.6 million internationally and $1.088 billion worldwide. The Dark Knight Rises became the latest film overtaken by Incredibles 2 on the All-time Worldwide chart and I bet Transformers: Age of Extinction won’t survive in 22nd place over the weekend. Furthermore, the film has yet to open in Italy and Germany, so getting into the top 20 will be easy.

Meanwhile, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom added $5.1 million in 60 markets for totals of $867.9 million internationally and $1.278 billion worldwide. It overtook both Beauty and the Beast and Frozen for 12th place on the all-time list.
