2017 Awards Season: Golden Globes Winners

The Golden Globes winners were announced on Sunday and there were a few surprises worth talking about, starting at the top. I was not expecting Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri to be the big winner of the night, but it was with four wins. Only two other movies, The Shape of Water and Lady Bird, won more than one award during the night.

• Alexandre Desplat for The Shape of Water

• “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman

• I really wanted The Shape of Water to be the big winner. It did win two awards, but that’s disappointing.
• Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri led the way with four wins and that makes sense given its reviews, but I also think it benefited from its subject matter. Unpunished sex crimes has been a running story in Hollywood this year.
• Get Out was shut out, which is a real shame, as it is my favorite film on this list that I’ve seen. (Admittedly, I haven’t seen many of the late contenders, because this time of year is an absolute nightmare at work.) However, while it is an amazing film, it is not a comedy and that might have hurt it with voters.
• The Post went zero for six. I still think it will pick up several Oscar nods, but I don’t think it will win any of the prestigious categories.
• Coco winning Best Animated Film is one of the least surprising results of the night.
