Another week with no powerhouse new releases has left National Treasure: Book of Secrets atop the DVD sales chart. During its third week in a row in first place, it sold 483,000 units for $7.45 million in revenue and running tallies of 4.91 million units and $78.33 million, which places it in third for the year. DVD Releases for June 3, 2008

June 3rd, 2008

This was a bad week for big movies, with not a single first run release is even worth rating a solid purchase, never mind being a contender for DVD Pick of the Week. There were a few other contenders for the title, including Dirty Harry Collection on DVD or Blu-ray. However, I found it impossible to decide which format was the better deal. Had the Blu-ray provided anything more than High Definition, or been a more reasonable price compared to the DVD, it would have been an easier choice. One of them is the DVD Pick of the Week, I just don't know which one. On a side note, there is an immense flood of Blu-ray releases, including a few I thought were coming out previously. More...

Spartans Spank Cavemen

March 11th, 2008

10,000 B.C. may have won the weekend with ease, but it wasn't able to come close to 300. Even if it had, the overall weekend would have still been behind last year's pace. Overall this weekend, movies brought in $107 million, which was 10% more than last weekend. However, it was a massive 30% lower than the same weekend last year. 2008 still has an advantage over 2007 at $1.67 billion to $1.61 billion, but ticket sales are now nearly identical. More...

International Details - International Auds Meet the Spartans

March 9th, 2008

Meet the Spartans made its first major push into the international market this past weekend earning sixth place with $7.94 million on 1653 screens in 14 markets for an early total of $12.90 million. Its biggest opening came in Germany where it scored second place with $3.01 million on 304 screens, however, it earned first place in both Mexico with $1.35 million on 543 screens and in Australia with $1.29 million on 211 screens. On the other hand, it fell by 59% during its second weekend in Russia pulling in $526,000 on 275 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.27 million after two. More...

Tens of Millions on its Way to 10,000 B.C.

March 7th, 2008

February ended on a disappointing note, and there are signs March could start off the same way. This time last year, 300 opened with an outstanding $70.89 million, a feat no film is likely to match this month. In fact, it is very, very unlikely that the three wide releases this week will earn that much combined. More...

Semi-Pro Throws Up an Air Ball

March 4th, 2008

Good news, 2008 is still ahead of 2007's pace by a substantial margin. Bad news, the lead is shrinking. Over the past three days, overall box office earnings were $97 million, which was 12% lower than last weekend. More importantly it was 22% lower than the same weekend last year. 2008 still has an 8% lead over last year, $1.54 billion to $1.43 billion, but at this pace, that lead won't last until the end of the month. More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of February 29, 2008

March 2nd, 2008

The Pros of Cons of the Movie Business

February 28th, 2008

Wide releases are rather limited this week with only one film debuting in more than 3,000 theaters while the other two are opening in barely more than 1,000 each. Overall, the new releases do have a lot more strength than last weekend, but not compared to last year. In fact, all three wide releases combined might not earn as much this weekend as Wild Hogs opened with last year, which is bad news for a market that is starting to slip in the year-to-year race. More...

Contest - Not For Amateurs

February 22nd, 2008

Our box office prediction contest returns this week and we have lots to give away, but first the target movie, which is Semi-Pro. In order to win, one must simply predict Semi-Pro's three-day, opening weekend box office. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a poster from Charlie Bartlett, as well as a poster and CD soundtrack to City of Men. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a poster from Charlie Bartlett and King of California on DVD Additionally, two other lucky participants will be chosen randomly and each will win a poster from Charlie Bartlett. Charlie Bartlett opens in theaters nationwide today, City of Men opens in limited release next Friday, while King of California came out on DVD at the end of January. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2008 Preview: February

February 1st, 2008

2008 got off to a faster than expected start with January helping the year to a 17.5% lead over 2007. It seems unlikely that February will be able to keep up that pace, but there are still enough releases that most avid moviegoers should find something to get excited about. Granted, this is partially due to the combination of the lead year and February 29th landing on a Friday. This means we have five weekends in February this year, something that only happens approximately once every 28 years, which explains the number of films. More...

Quite a few full sites launched this week, but as is the case most times, there were pretty Spartan at the moment and it will take a few more updates before we can tell if they are award-worthy or not.
