Synopsis
Two couples on a lakeside getaway grow suspicious that the host of their seemingly perfect rental house may be spying on them. Before long, what should have been a celebratory weekend trip turns into something far more sinister, as well-kept secrets are exposed and the four old friends come to see each other in a whole new light.

Weekend estimates: Honest Thief wins weekend with $3.7 million

Honest Thief will top the domestic box office this weekend with a $3.7 million opening that is in line with expectations, and provides more evidence that the theatrical business is at least stable in the United States. Relatively good numbers for the re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas bolster that argument, although 2 Hearts is underperforming hopes. Overall, it’s a story of two steps forward, one step back.

Weekend estimates: The War with Grandpa pulls off surprise win

Although the theatrical market is still in the doldrums, The War with Grandpa is providing some welcome good news this weekend with a surprise win. 101 Studios is projecting $3.608 million for the weekend, which is more than double our prediction, and wouldn’t be a particularly surprising result for a film like this from a new distributor under normal circumstances. Its performance raises some interesting questions about what films will and won’t work in theaters at the moment.

Weekend Wrap-Up: Tax Collector Collects What’s Due
August 12th, 2020
For the third weekend in a row, a new film topped the weekend box office chart. This time it was The Tax Collector, as the action film opened in first place with $310,000 in 129 theaters. The film didn’t win over many critics, but it has a grindhouse feel that helped it thrive in drive-ins. The overall market for films reporting official results was close to $750,000, making this technically the best weekend since March 13. It’s a low bar to clear, but we’ll take what we can get at the moment.

DEG Watched At Home Chart: Something New to Report

Most of the top five on the DEG Watched at Home chart this week are the same as they were
last week. Most, but not all. Trolls World Tour did remain in first place for what seems like forever. But a new Universal release was next: the Kevin Bacon / Amanda Seyfried thriller, You Should Have Left. Given its mixed critical reception, it probably won’t stay there long.

Weekend Wrap-Up: Rental Extends its Lease on Top of the Box Office Chart

The Rental remained in top spot on the weekend box office chart, this time earning $290,000 in 242 theaters. This was down just 28% from its opening weekend and pushed its running tally to $890,000. It will join films like The Wretched and Relic in the $1 million club. That latter film just reached that milestone this past weekend.

Weekend Wrap-Up: Rental has a Place to Stay on the Box Office Chart

For the first time since Trolls World Tour came out, we have a newly-released film in first place on the weekend box office chart. The Rental, Dave Franco’s directorial debut, topped the chart with $404,000 in 250 theaters. In normal times, this would be a terrible opening. However, since most theaters that are open are dealing with greatly reduced capacity, this is worth celebrating. It wasn’t the only new release to do well, as The Big Ugly earned fifth place with an estimated $150,000 in 68 theaters.

Limited and Virtual Releases: Will Audiences Say “Yes” to any Limited Release this Week?

This is going to be a good weekend if you like horror, as there are three such films to choose from arriving in theaters. All of them are earning good reviews too, but the competition may result in none of them finding an audience in theaters. On the other and, Yes, God, Yes is the only drama / comedy generating any buzz, so it has its target audience to itself. Unfortunately, lighter movies have not done well during the pandemic, so it faces an uphill battle.
