Weekend Wrap-Up: Rental Extends its Lease on Top of the Box Office Chart

August 4th, 2020

The Rental

The Rental remained in top spot on the weekend box office chart, this time earning $290,000 in 242 theaters. This was down just 28% from its opening weekend and pushed its running tally to $890,000. It will join films like The Wretched and Relic in the $1 million club. That latter film just reached that milestone this past weekend. More...

DEG Watched At Home Chart: Trolls can’t be Toppled, but Bruce Lee Fights His Way onto the Chart

Trolls World Tour

There was a major shake-up on the DEG Watched at Home chart this week when compared to last week. Just kidding. The same five releases remained in the top five, just in a slightly different order. This means Trolls World Tour remained locked in first place on the chart and will likely remain there until Scoob! comes out. Universal also led the way with four releases in the top twenty, but unlike last week, it was in a three-way tie with Paramount and Sony. More...

Weekend Wrap-Up: Disney has a Beautiful Weekend at the Box Office

July 21st, 2020

Disney

Disney again topped the charts over the weekend, as Beauty and the Beast earned $467,000 in 527 theaters according to Deadline. The second place film was another Disney re-release, Iron Man with $430,000 in 462 theaters. Meanwhile, Bohemian Rhapsody was released by Fox, which it is now owned by Disney, and it earned third place with $240,000 in 376 theaters. All three films were in the first weekend of their re-release. That seems to be Disney’s strategy: release a movie for a single weekend, grab a spot in the top five, and use that as free publicity to promote the films, all of which are either on Disney Plus or Hulu. On the other hand, the next two films, Jurassic Park ($210,000 in 246 theaters) and The Goonies ($202,000 in 138), have been in re-release for weeks. More...

Weekend Wrap-Up: Empire Strikes Back, Again

July 14th, 2020

Disney

For the third time in the past 40 years, The Empire Strikes Back opened in first place on the weekend box office chart. According to Deadline, the film pulled in $611,000 over the three-day weekend for a total opening of $644,000. This puts it near the very top of the pandemic re-releases, ahead of last week’s winner, Ghostbusters, looking at the three-day figure, but behind it over five. More...

Last week, Disney dominated the chart with re-releases. This week, it was Sony’s turn. This past weekend, Deadline has Ghostbusters earning first place with a reported weekend haul of $550,000 in 622 theaters giving it a five-day box office of $656,000. This could be a good omen for Afterlife, which may or may not come out in March. Sony also had the second place film, Jumanji: The Next Level, which added $300,000 in 220 theaters over the weekend for a total of $317.3 million so far. More...
