Synopsis
Devoted to their devastated mother, siblings Aidan and Mia resent Grace, the younger woman their newly separated father plans to marry. They flatly reject Grace’s attempts to bond, and they dig up dirt on her tragic past—but soon they find themselves trapped with her, snowed in in a remote holiday village after their dad heads back to the city for work. Just as relations begin to thaw, strange and frightening events threaten to unearth psychological demons from Grace’s strictly religious childhood.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for May 5th, 2020
May 6th, 2020
It’s a sad week for DVDs / Blu-rays as there are no top-notch first-run releases. Gretel and Hansel is the biggest and the best first-run release on this week’s list, but its DVD / Blu-ray don’t have enough extras to be a Pick of the Week contender. Likewise, The Lodge is amazing, but its DVD / Blu-ray have no extras… Is Elvira: Mistress of the Dark really the Pick of the Week? It came out last week, but the screener was late, so it is the best release on this week’s list.

Streaming Releases: These New Releases are not Half-Hearted
May 2nd, 2020
The Half of It leads the way when it comes to streaming releases. The coming-of-age teenage romance movie should please most viewers. On the other hand, Hollywood has the loudest buzz when it comes to the TV series end of the list, but its reviews are disappointing.

Theater Averages: The Lodge Takes up Residence in Top Spot
February 13th, 2020
It is very rare for a horror film to lead the way on the theater average chart, but The Lodge did just that with an average of $12,709 in six theaters. The only other member of the $10,000 club was Cane River, which earned $10,240 in its lone theater.

Weekend Estimates: Harley Quinn Can’t Lead Her Film to Box Office Success
February 9th, 2020
Birds of Prey is missing even the very low end of expectations with an estimated opening weekend of $33.25 million. The film is earning good reviews and a decent B plus rating from CinemaScore, and it is also the cheapest installment in the D.C.E.U., so this start isn’t disastrous. On the other hand, it is struggling more internationally with just $48 million on 22,362 screens in 78 markets. Part of this has to do with the coronavirus, which has caused major disruptions in many Asian countries. And I’m not just talking about the entertainment industry. So far close to 1,000 people have died, which is a major disaster. Although to put this into perspective, this flu season, about 10,000 people have died in the United States alone.

Limited and VOD Releases: Legend of the Dancing Daddy
February 7th, 2020
It’s a short week for limited releases with only seven films in total. However, most of them are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Of these, Come to Daddy is the one I’m most interested in. That said, Legend of Deification stands out, because it is an animated Chinese film.
