DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 5th, 2011
April 5th, 2011
It's Tron week with at least seven releases related to Tron and Tron: Legacy. This appears to have scared away the competition, because outside of those releases, there's not much of a selection. Actually, there are three $100 million hits coming out this week; however, one doesn't come out till Friday, so I'll likely deal with it next week after the screener arrives, and the other is so bad it's best to pretend it doesn't exist. Those two films are clearly the Pick of the Week, but depending on where you buy your DVDs, the Combo Pack may or may nor be less expensive than buying the two films separately, so double-check before you buy.

Awards Season - Oscar Nods far from Curious
January 22nd, 2009
For a year without an obvious front-runner for the Oscar race, there were not a whole lot of surprises when it came to the nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their nominations today and leading the way was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with thirteen while Slumdog Millionaire was second with ten.

The final guild nominations were recently announced, and there are several theatrical categories to get to. DVD Sales - Mamma Hot on Sales Chart
January 1st, 2009
There were only three new releases to chart this week, sort of. Call in three and a half new releases, but we will get to that in a bit. On the top of the sales chart this week was Mamma Mia!, which sold 3.72 million units for $77.68 million in consumer retail spending.

Awards Season - The Curious Case of the Frost/Nixon Globe Nominations
December 12th, 2008
The latest set of Awards Season nominations were handed out today as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations. There was not much in the way of surprises, and it is hard to look at one film and say it was the big winner, but Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button come the closest.

DVD Sales - People Getting Smart on Home Market
November 19th, 2008
There were four new releases to chart this week, or perhaps five. It depends on how you count Kung Fu Panda. The number one release for the week was Get Smart, which sold 862,000 units and generated $16.50 million in consumer retail spending. Second place went to Kung Fu Panda with 780,000 units / $13.51 million, although that film didn't officially come out until Sunday, meaning these sales came mostly from one day. (There were a few stores selling the DVD on Saturday.)

DVD Releases for November 18, 2008 - Part II
November 18th, 2008
It's a weird week for the DVD release report. According to Amazon, seven of the top ten releases come from two movie: WALL-E and Tropic Thunder. Add in the Spanish language edition and there are five versions of the former movie coming out this week, including the 3-Disc DVD and the 3-Disc Blu-ray, either one of which is worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. The overall group of releases feels weaker than last week, but it is more than enough that it had to be split into two parts. Part one can be found here.

DVD Releases for November 11, 2008 - Part II
November 11th, 2008
I have just one word to describe this week's DVD Release Report, and that word is, 'Ggrrghfuul.' 'Ggrrghfuul' is the sound one makes after reviewing 19 DVDs in one week, and I wasn't even able to put a dent in my pile of late DVDs. (On a related note, I have never been late reviewing a movie, as long as it arrives before the weekend before the movie is released. Given how busy some weeks have been, that's quite a feat.) As for the actual releases, there are a number of top-notch offerings coming out on Tuesday, and one that came out on Sunday. These include Firefly - The Complete Series - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon, Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army - Buy from Amazon: 3-Disc DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray Collector's Edition, and Sunset Boulevard - Centennial Collection - Buy from Amazon. All three are worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week, and I'm not going to bother to narrow it down further. Additionally, there are two late releases featured on this week's list, Futurama - Bender's Game - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and Kung Fu Panda - Buy from Amazon: DVD, With Secrets of the Furious Five, or Blu-ray, and both of these are also worthy of DVD Pick of the Week Honors. As expected with such a massive amount of releases, the list has been split into two and the first part can be found here.

Its best market of the weekend was Germany, where it remained in first place with $4.58 million on 754 screens over the weekend for a total of $17.61 million after two. The film's best market of the week was Spain where it remained in first place with $3.98 million on 575 screens for a total of $16.86 million. It is also performing well in Germany where it held on to second place with $1.70 million on 755 screens over the weekend and $33.62 million after four. However, it is starting to slip in the U.K. falling to fifth place with $1.40 million on 400 screens, but its total of $45.15 million in that market is still fantastic. Hellboy is Hot, Box Office is Not

This is 5.5% lower than last weekend, and more disturbingly, 16.6% lower than the same weekend last year. Year to date, 2008 is not behind 2007 by 2.4% at $5.04 billion to $5.16 billion. It is too early to push the panic button, but there is certainly reason to be concerned, especially if things don't turn around.

Will Rules the Weekend, but Overall Box Office Not that Super
July 8th, 2008
Hancock lived up to expectations, but it was the only film in the top five that did so. This led to overall box office receipts of just $160 million over the weekend, which was 8% lower than last weekend and 14% lower than the same weekend last year. This is the first time in a month that 2008 hasn't kept pace with 2007, and year-to-date 2008 has again fallen behind 2007, $4.81 billion to $4.84 billion. There's a strong case for mitigating circumstances, however, as July 4th landed on the Friday and Independence Day is not a holiday that is normally associated with strong box office numbers. So 2008 could regain its lead if The Dark Knight proves to be a big hit.

(The best opening of the year was by The Very Best Film, which is a local film that broke the record back in January.) Other major markets for Wanted include South Korea where it made $5.36 million on 629 screens over the weekend and $6.81 million in total, which was enough for first place. The Happening also did better than expected, picking up $30 million.

June 8th, 2008
Kung Fu Panda and You Don't Mess With the Zohan both opened strongly over the weekend.
Panda made an impressive $60 million, according to Paramount's Sunday estimate, about on par with Pixar's Cars and Monsters, Inc..
Zohan, meanwhile, pulled in an estimated $40 million, which is almost exactly the same as most of Adam Sandler's other comedy releases (see Click, 50 First Dates,
Anger Management, Mr. Deeds, Big Daddy and The Waterboy).

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of June 6, 2008
June 8th, 2008
Two wide releases this week, and both had strong sites. This is good news as so far this summer I've been disappointed with the selection of sites more often than not. However, while both were strong, Kung Fu Panda's Official Site was in a class by itself and it easily wins the Weekly Website Award.

Panda vs. Hairdresser
June 5th, 2008
June starts off with two potential blockbusters. Fortunately, they share nearly none of their respective target audiences and this could help them both reach their potential. Kung Fu Panda and You Don't Mess With the Zohan are both opening in more than 3,000 theaters (4,000 in the case of the former), and both should hit $10,000 on the per theater chart. Considering this weekend last year was weaker than expected, this bodes well for 2008's shot at playing catch-up.

2008 Preview: June
June 1st, 2008
June is filled with top picks, and practically only top picks. The best schedule for the overall health of the movie industry is only two wide releases, the potential blockbuster and the counter-programming release. This month that's exactly what happens; however, almost every week the counter-programming film has a serious shot at $100 million as well. If everything goes well, then we could have 8 films opening this month that crack 9 digits and that would put 2008 back on track. Even a more conservative estimate has four $100 million movies coming out this month, but there's a lot of uncertainty involved here. On the limited front, none of May's limited releases managed to breakout and expand wide, so there's still an opening for sleeper hit of the summer. That role could be filled by The Promotion, which appears to have the best shot at escaping the art hour circuit and reaching multiplexes.

Contest - Pandas are in Good Company
May 30th, 2008
White and black, the friendly bears of China
White and black, they rarely reproduce
What shall be done about these Chinese bears?
What shall be done about these friendly bears?
Die, they must die
The pandas must die!
I love that song. Too bad the CD is out of print, or I would have offered a copy or two as prizes. (On a side note, the video for "REMember" is one of the best music video parodies out there.) That's not to say we don't have enough prizes as it is. In order to win these prizes, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Kung Fu Panda.
Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win Company on Blu-ray, as well as Drew Hastings - Irked and Miffed on DVD and CD.
Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win Company on Blu-ray, as well as, Minutemen on DVD and Cory in the House - Newt and Improved on DVD.
Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay!

Movie Website Updates for June 3 - June 9, 2007
June 9th, 2007
There are a lot of movies on this week's list, but many have just the synopsis, image gallery, and the trailer, and many don't even have that. There were very few that stood out, but at least Speed Racer - Official Site got off to a great start. Perhaps it will win the award before it hits theaters.

Movie Website Updates for January 27 - February 2, 2007
February 3rd, 2007
Busy week for limited releases and a busy week for websites, which explains why I'm wrapping things up at midnight. There wasn't a whole lot on this week's list that really attracted my attention, but I'm giving the Weekly Website Award to Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters - Official Site, mainly for their ... extracurricular activities of the viral marketers in Boston. And remember people, real bombs are meant to be inconspicuous, they won't sing you a song or make rude gestures at you. More...DVD Releases for December 12, 2006

While the number of DVDs coming out this week isn't has high as last week, there is still a high level of quality with several contenders for DVD Pick of the Week, including The Devil Wears Prada - Buy from Amazon and World Trade Center - 2-Disc Commemorative Edition. However, the clear winner was James Bond - Ultimate Edition, both Volume 3 and Volume 4.
