DVD Sales - New Releases Sink on Sales Chart

New releases did not make much of an impact on the home market this week while overall sales slumped dramatically. This is not unusual for this time of year, especially the week after the last winter blockbuster came out. That blockbuster, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, remained in first place on the sales chart, even after collapsing more than 70% to 941,000 units sold. International Details - Sex not as Popular with International Audiences

Sex and the City made its international debut this past weekend, and while it wasn't able to top the charts like it did domestically, it still managed a fantastic $32.77 million on 3590 screens in 14 markets over the weekend for a total of $37.52 million. Its biggest opening came in the U.K. where it dominated the market with $17.22 million on 460 screens, which is equivalent to an $80 million to $100 million opening here. It also finished first in Germany with $7.41 million on 836 screens. It also did very well in France with $6.12 million on 551 screens and in Italy with $2.74 million on 552 screens, finishing second in both markets. DVD Sales - Indy Re-Finds Treasure

It is very rare for a box set to come out on top of the DVD sales chart, and it's even rarer for a double-dip to top the charts, but that's exactly what happened this week. Fool's Gold opened in a trio of major markets and that helped the film climb into sixth place with $4.93 million on 1809 screens in 39 markets for a total of $26.30 million. The film did relatively well in Spain with $1.03 million on 272 screens and in Germany with $934,000 on 254 screens while earning second place in both markets. On the other hand, it bombed in Italy with just $516,000 on 232 screens landing in sixth place. Overall, it was better than the film's average so far, but not nearly enough to recover from its previous troubles. One of the last major Oscar contenders is coming out this week, and it is the only real contender for DVD Pick of the Week. Fortunately, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - Buy from Amazon is certainly worth that title. There is also an honorable mention in the form of His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass - Blu-ray, which not only includes additional features from the DVD, but is actually cheaper. Nim's Island made its first push onto the international chart landing in sixth place with $4.53 million on 970 screens in 7 markets for a very early total of $5.64 million. The film opened in first place in Italy with $1.71 million on 304 screens while it expanded into fourth place in Australia with $780,000 on 196 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.69 million after two. The film also made its debut in France with $1.65 million on 399 screens, which was only enough for fifth place. Nim's Island is using a graduated release schedule and doesn't have a major opening for the rest of the month. Jumper landed on top of the international chart during its opening weekend with $29.37 million on 2828 screens in 30 markets, 20 of which the film opened in first place. These number one debuts include the U.K. where it earned $5.99 million on 406 screens and South Korea where it made $4.02 million on 429 screens over the weekend and $5.07 million in total. Weekend Estimates: Jumper Wins Battle of the Niches

The combination of Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day gave us a de facto five day weekend, and gave the studios a reason to release movies that cater to practically every audience. Teenage boys seem to have won the battle of the niches, with Jumper winning the 3-day part of the weekend with $27.2 million, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Teenage girls came in second, with Step Up 2 the Streets making about $19.7 million, enough to put family movie The Spiderwick Chronicles in 3rd place with $19.1 million. Weekend Box Office Equal Parts Gold and Fool

Results over the weekend were mixed with the number one film opening above expectations by a small degree, but the top five weaker than predicted. This led to the overall box office coming in at just over $112 million, which is down 12% from last weekend. However, it is virtually tied with the same weekend last year. (It is currently down by less than $200,000, but that could change as some independent films finalize their weekend figures and release the numbers later this week.) The New York Giants stopped the Patriots from completing a perfect season. However, from where I'm sitting, this isn't the biggest news of the weekend. Multiple records were broken by Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour. This helped the overall box office hit $128 million over the weekend, which is down 10% from last weekend, but this is reasonable considering this is a post-holiday weekend and Super Bowl Weekend. Records fell this week as Cloverfield became the biggest film ever to debut on Martin Luther King long weekend, as well as setting a few other records (including topping Star Wars long standing January opening record).
