International Details - Some Enchanted Weekend

Enchanted fell out of the top five but still had a very impressive weekend box office adding $8.12 million on 4348 screens in 43 markets for a total of $151.50 million. This includes a fifth place opening in South Korea where the film earned $1.08 million on 322 screens over the weekend and $1.34 million in total. Meanwhile it also earned fifth place in the U.K. with $1.59 million on 472 screens over the weekend for a total of $29.46 million after a month of release. Its chances at $200 million internationally depend heavily on its run in Japan staring mid-March, but $300 million worldwide is all but assured now.

  • American Gangster opened in third place in Australia, but was within striking distance of first with $2.95 million on 255 screens. Overall it made $6.89 million on 1771 screens in 38 markets for a total of $81.55 million and could reach $250 million worldwide depending on how well it does in its final major markets.
  • The end of holidays, and no major openings, hurt Bee Movie as it fell 53% to $6.77 million on 4049 screens in 45 markets for a total of $142.30 million. Impressively, the film was down only 20% during its second weekend in South Korea, which is not a market known for strong legs, as it added $1.58 million on 296 screens for a total of $4.66 million. The film debuted in Tokyo over the weekend, but doesn't expand wide in Japan till the end of the month. At that point, we will have a solid idea on where it will end its run.
  • L'Allenatore Ne Pallone 2 missed first place in its native market of Italy but still managed ninth place overall with $5.32 million on 510 screens.
  • Keinohrhasen was down just 19% capturing 10th place with $5.22 million on 690 screens in 3 market for a total of $30.77 million. Of this total, $28.01 million has come from Germany, including $4.75 million on 610 screens this past weekend.
  • Atonement debuted in third place in Spain with $1.64 million on 181 screens, but it was not enough to push it into the top ten. It came very close finishing in 11th place with $4.84 million on 861 screens in 22 markets for a total of $43.85 million internationally. Other weekend openings include France where it placed fourth with $993,000 on 225 screens in Brazil where it landed in eighth place with $249,000 on 46.
  • Women's Team Handball opened in first place in South Korea and 12th overall with $4.37 million on 440 screens over the weekend and $5.19 million in total.
  • P.S. I Love You slipped to 13th place with $4.26 million on 971 screens in 9 markets for a still early total of $20.16 million. The film had no major openings this week, but it did hold strong in the U.K. down just 19% to $2.84 million on 369 screens for a total of $10.26 million in that one market.
  • Ironiya sudby. Prodolzhenie, a.k.a., the Irony of Fate 2 fell more than 60% to $3.46 million on 829 screens in 5 markets for a total of $49.25 million. However, it was still able to set a record in Russia where it has made $44.61 million in total, including $3.14 million on 740 screens this past weekend.
  • Earth a.k.a. Planet Earth, is the best selling high definition title of all time (using raw dollars as a measure), returned to the charts in 15th place this week. The film added $3.42 million on 330 screens in 3 markets for a running tally of $19.13 million. Almost all of the film's weekend box office came from Japan where it opened in first place with $3.30 million on 275 screens over the weekend, which bodes well for its long term chances.
  • Charlie Wilson's War made its first appearance on the charts with $3.32 million on 518 screens in 6 markets over the weekend for a very early total of $4.06 million. Of that, $2.62 million on 405 screens came from the film's third place debut in the U.K.
  • Open City opened in second place in South Korea with $3.26 millio on 413 screens over the weekend and $3.81 million in total.
  • 27 Dresses opened a week early in Australia placing a very close second to I am Legend $3.15 million to $3.19 million. In fact, adding in previews, the film earned $3.20 million in 240 screens so far.
  • Black And White opened in second place in Italy with $2.56 million on 280 screens, which was enough for 19th place overall.
  • Into The Wild charted for the first time placing 20th with $2.34 million on 237 screens in 6 markets for a total of $5.83 million. This include a surprise first place opening in France with $2.03 million on just 172 screens.
  • The Warlords added $2.08 million on 486 screens in 6 markets for a total of $38.77 million.
  • St. Trinian's fell to 22nd place with $2.02 million on 385 screens in its native market for a total of $18.09 million after for weeks.
  • Season of Snow opened with $1.75 million on 266 screens, which was enough for third place in Japan and 23rd place overall.
  • Arn: The Knight Templar opened in Denmark over the weekend, which is one of 6 markets that co-produced the film. There it placed first with $511,000 on 40 screens over the weekend and $563,000 in total. Add in holdovers and the film made $1.72 million on 280 screens in 3 markets for a total of $13.27 million.
  • Hitman likely spent its last week in the top 30, at least until it arrives in Japan in April. This week it brought in $1.65 million on 1141 screens in 10 markets for a total of $54.54 million.
  • 30 Days Of Night returned to the charts in 26th place with $1.61 million on 569 screens in 14 markets for a total of $25.51 million. The film was aided by unimpressive openings in both France ($962,000 on 199 screens) and in South Korea ($333,000 on 144 screens over the weekend and $388,000 in total). The film has yet to open in Japan, but it seems unlikely that it will turn around its fortunes at this point.
  • Cilgin Dersane Kampta opened in first place in Turkey with $1.50 million on 213 screens, which was enough for 27th place overall.
  • The Kite Runner entered the charts for the first time with $1.48 million on 342 screens in 4 markets for a total of $4.77 million. This includes a second place opening in the Netherlands where it earned $446,000 on 65 screens over the weekend and $740,000 in total.
  • The Mist returned to the charts in 29th place with $1.45 million on 211 screens in 6 markets for a total of $5.48 million. The vast majority of the film's weekend haul came from South Korea where it opened in fourth place with a respectable $1.41 million on 256 screens over the weekend and $1.69 million in total.
  • The Water Horse: Legend Of The Deep also returned to the charts this week pulling in $1.40 million on 547 screens in 3 markets for a total of $4.46 million. The film opened in Australia but only managed fifth place with $1.03 million on 190 screens.
